Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

University City has a wealth of houses and apartments for rent. The Powelton area alone is full of real estate. Be careful of shady landlords there. They will try to take advantage of you, no matter who you are. Don’t get swindled into accepting a place that is run down with many problems, such as broken-down appliances, along with some unwelcome tenants—rodents and pests. Know your rights. The off-campus housing office can give you a pamphlet with help on this subject. Slimy landlords aside, there are some nice places in the area. You can move into a big, old house that has hardwood floors and fireplaces with a bunch of your friends, or you can get an apartment in a high rise or a section of a house. Apartments in high rises like Chestnut Hall, the Left Bank, and Campus Apartments tend to be very expensive, though.

The one thing you’ve got to always keep in mind with off-campus housing is that you must look early. Start looking in the winter before the academic year you want to move in. The office of off-campus housing can be a big help with this. Check their Web site (www.drexel.edu/oca/offcampushousingdefault.asp) for listings and follow up on your calls.

Off-Campus Housing

After freshman year many students choose to live "off-campus". Surrounding the dorms are many places for rent. Also, Drexel has leases the first couple of floors of University Crossings. This is nice because your you can pay for housing through with your student loans and grants. The process of independent living is a gradual process.

Off-Campus Housing

So basically it depends on how much you're willing to spend on off-campus housing. There are many choices, especially north of campus behind Van R. The only place I wouldn't recommend is between 33rd and 32nd on Powelton, many of the houses aren't the best looking things internally nor externally, though almost everything nearby has been lived in by college students, so good luck.

Expensive Near Campus

Since the city itself is full of college students, there are lots of off-campus housing options available. But, it is expensive near campus. If you are willing to walk a little, you might get cheaper places. Beware, safety is a big issue, as all neighborhoods are not safe. landlords are fine, they are used to dealing with students.
