College Prowler Take

University City has a wealth of houses and apartments for rent. The Powelton area alone is full of real estate. Be careful of shady landlords there. They will try to take advantage of you, no matter who you are. Don’t get swindled into accepting a place that is run down with many problems, such as broken-down appliances, along with some unwelcome tenants—rodents and pests. Know your rights. The off-campus housing office can give you a pamphlet with help on this subject. Slimy landlords aside, there are some nice places in the area. You can move into a big, old house that has hardwood floors and fireplaces with a bunch of your friends, or you can get an apartment in a high rise or a section of a house. Apartments in high rises like Chestnut Hall, the Left Bank, and Campus Apartments tend to be very expensive, though.

The one thing you’ve got to always keep in mind with off-campus housing is that you must look early. Start looking in the winter before the academic year you want to move in. The office of off-campus housing can be a big help with this. Check their Web site (www.drexel.edu/oca/offcampushousingdefault.asp) for listings and follow up on your calls.

Drexel University has six freshman...

Drexel University has six freshman residence halls, and two upperclassmen halls (with another opening in Fall 2009). Considering the fact that many Drexel students enroll in five-year programs, the vast majority of students living in on-campus housing are freshmen. There are ample opportunities to find apartments, houses, etc. in off-campus housing ("off-campus" simply means "not owned by Drexel," though a lot of the housing is, technically, within Drexel's campus). Housing can be expensive, as in any other city, unless you're in a bad neighborhood. Expect to pay $500-$1000 per month for off-campus housing.

On-campus housing after freshman...

On-campus housing after freshman year is pretty easy to get, and after freshman year the dorms are very nice. The dorms are pricey though, and it may be better to move off campus, especially if saving money is a necessity.

There is a lot of off-campus housing. Watch out for landlords trying to screw you over with a mouse infested house that they will never fix up. Avoid Urban Shelter.

People around here charge an arm and a leg because they can. If you get dorm housing, take it. Otherwise, find something nice that you feel safe in. I’m not a fan of most streets past Powelton Ave., but Baring St. has nice apartments. A lot of people live on Powelton or Hamilton. Try to grab the closer apartments from seniors that are leaving.
