Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

University City has a wealth of houses and apartments for rent. The Powelton area alone is full of real estate. Be careful of shady landlords there. They will try to take advantage of you, no matter who you are. Don’t get swindled into accepting a place that is run down with many problems, such as broken-down appliances, along with some unwelcome tenants—rodents and pests. Know your rights. The off-campus housing office can give you a pamphlet with help on this subject. Slimy landlords aside, there are some nice places in the area. You can move into a big, old house that has hardwood floors and fireplaces with a bunch of your friends, or you can get an apartment in a high rise or a section of a house. Apartments in high rises like Chestnut Hall, the Left Bank, and Campus Apartments tend to be very expensive, though.

The one thing you’ve got to always keep in mind with off-campus housing is that you must look early. Start looking in the winter before the academic year you want to move in. The office of off-campus housing can be a big help with this. Check their Web site (www.drexel.edu/oca/offcampushousingdefault.asp) for listings and follow up on your calls.

Varies

There is a wide variety of off-campus housing options around Drexel University. The places that are closest to school are very expensive and not necessarily the nicest places since college kids have lived in them over the decades. As you get further away from campus, places become cheaper, but you are also living amongst Philadelphia residents which may or may not be comfortable for you.

Not Much Useful Information Provided

Pros:

Abundance. There are indeed quite a lot of off-housing offers to choose from.

Cons:

However, these choices are not always easy. Housing is available only if you can afford high rental costs.

There are also far more apartments than studios for rent, which is very inconvenient for those who prefer living on their own.

The safety issue is a heated one. The farther your residental buidling is away from the campus, the more dangerous it is to commute by yourself from your apartment/studio to your school and vice versa, especially at nights. None of my friends who are now living off-campus wants to go out alone after 7:PM.

Drexel Off-Campus Housing

Overall, housing is pricier than most parts of Philly for quality less than par. #1 rule is to know your landloard and research them. They will be your worse nightmare or best friend. Research the building for reviews and if things come back negative, listen to that advice. The choices, however, are immense and if price isn't a worry - The Hub and places similar cater directly to students with awesome gyms, tanning booths, study lounges, and modern apartments within their buildings.
