College Prowler Take
Students at Duke seem to have found the academic experience, thanks in large part to their teachers, pretty satisfying on the whole. This is not to say that everything about Duke academics is peachy; some of the math and science professors certainly sound like they could liven up a little. There is also the age-old problem of distinguished faculty who are there for the research facilities and not much else. However, researching professors can be a remarkable asset if they choose to keep students involved—which many are willing, able, and even excited to do. Even lecture classes need not be survival-only. Many lecturers take special care to get to know students one-on-one, and lectures will almost always have a lab or a discussion group taught by student TAs, so students get more personal attention. All Duke professors are well educated and established in their field, and most students will tell you that the professors here do their best to relay their knowledge to the students in a way that is easily comprehensible, yet challenging at the same time. Faculty members are excited about their subjects, and more importantly, about teaching what they know to their students. Duke’s professors play a vital role in the quality and success of its academics.

The teachers at Duke are typical college professors. Most of them have a uniqueness that makes their class more interesting, and they really lecture, too. But they do their job, and they do it well. The academic programs are notoriously excellent, and if you graduate from your courses, you should be set on a nicely paved career path. |

Professors at Duke are all highly qualified, and most are distinguished in their field. In my first year of classes, my professors included a renowned fiction writer, a Nobel prize laureate, a member of Jimmy Carter’s presidential cabinet, and a former military commander. |

Often, the teachers here are great. Duke has an open-door policy so you can contact the professors at any time. At the law school, my professors were always available the night before an exam to answer questions. They often gave us their private phone numbers as well. |

Well, just as everywhere, the quality of teaching varies. There are some incredibly wonderful professors and some grad students who really shouldn’t be teaching classes just yet. It’s best to ask an upperclassman. They’ll know who’s phenomenal and who’s abominable. |
