Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Duke basketball is not just a pastime—it is an obsession. The current of basketball fanaticism pulses through everyone and everything at Duke, and between November and March, games in Cameron Indoor simply define the Duke way of life. You see a ridiculously tall guy get on the bus, and the eyes of the students all around you light up. This is not to say that you have to be a basketball fan before you come here—Duke will most definitely make one out of you. Be forewarned, though: cheering and getting into the basketball games is a sport unto itself, filled with hours of standing in line (or, in the case of the UNC game, weeks in tents) and gallons of blue face paint.

The classic college sport—football—is certainly less appreciated at Duke, but thanks to a sky-high level of school spirit and some great student-athletes on every varsity team, the stands across campus remain decently crowded.

Basketball

Look I don't like Basketball nor will I ever, but you can't help vibing with the enthusiasm this school emanates. Come basketball season, the quads will be cleared because everyone's cramming into the nearest room they can find with a TV channel tuned in to ESPN2. The school is obviously one of the top in basketball, but the amazing thing is how the entire school rallies around them to have the team continue. And the gyms on campus are a perfect place to go if you think you can be an athlete of your own. ;)

We suck at football, but who cares because we have DUKE BASKETBALL. The other varsity sports are talented as well, but not as fun to watch.

Most Popular Sports

Men’s basketball. Take a "smart-kid" school, add one really exceptional sports team, and it will become the mecca around which we all flock.

Most Overlooked Teams

Women’s basketball is not necessarily overlooked, but the sport certainly doesn't get the attention it deserves, especially considering that Duke has some of the nation’s top players. The lacrosse team is also top-notch, recently garnering a national championship; however, it does not have one iota of the fan frenzy that basketball generates.

School Spirit

Duke spirit invariably centers around the basketball season, and during the spring, it's amazing how avid people are for Duke. While there are still some bitter Harvard and Yale rejects dampening the mood around campus, most students are genuinely thrilled about being at Duke. The Duke paraphernalia is ubiquitous, and students represent the brand regularly. Walk across the quad on a cool day and you're bound to see a handful of people wearing a 100-percent Duke outfit: sweatpants, T-shirt, and sweatshirt.

Getting Tickets

Students get into Duke games for free, and getting in is usually not a problem. For example, you can walk up to the football stadium during halftime, and you’ll be sure to get in for free. The same is certainly not true for men’s basketball. The stories you have heard of people camping out for months to get tickets are not in the least exaggerated. Students form groups and plan schedules around being able to sleep in a tent from January to mid-February or early March. You can usually get into basketball games without camping out, but you will still have to get there several hours early to wait in line.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Sarah P. Duke Gardens is astoundingly beautiful. Duke Forest may be tempting, but don’t ever try it alone. Of course, everywhere on campus is beautiful, so even the walk from East to West can be enjoyable.
