You’ll hear plenty of complaints about the freshman meal plan, and many of them are justified. This meal plan requires freshmen to eat breakfast and dinner at the Marketplace every weekday (except Friday, when it’s only breakfast), as well as brunch on Saturday and Sunday. On the one hand, this is very convenient; you eat dinner with your friends every night and don’t have to worry about paying for over-priced fast food. On the other hand, although the food is really not nearly as bad as everyone will tell you, it really wears on you after a while. West Campus, however, abounds with places to eat. Until you finally break down and beg for homemade food, West and Science Drive should be able to satisfy all your cravings, as well as creating a few. Duke’s food service is known to be among the best in the nation, but students will complain anyway. If you can’t find something you like on campus, you can use points to order from off campus. If you can’t find something you like there, pack up and go home—because you won’t find better college food anywhere else.

The food is pretty good, and I think the meal plans cover almost all the places on campus. The Great Hall is a cafeteria with pretty good food and lots of variety, and the Loop has good sandwiches and pizza. There is also a hot dog stand and a Breyer’s ice cream shop. Eating at the hospital is always a good choice, as it is cheap, and there are several places in the food court. |

For the most part, I really like the food in the dining hall. It definitely doesn’t compare to homecooked meals, but there seems to be a lot of variety. And there is a nice variety of other eateries on campus, such as the Loop, Alpine, and Armadillo Grill. |

I’ve seen the slop of other schools, and in comparison, ours is definitely better. We can get steaks six days a week and seafood. They definitely try hard to make sure we’re well fed (just check out my Freshmen and then Sophomore 15). My favorite places to eat are the Loop and the Great Hall. |

The cafeteria food is decent, though it gets old after awhile. The quality seems to rejuvenate itself around family and alumni weekends. The campus offers a million options with points that are initially delicious, but frankly, going to the same restaurants all the time is boring. I need more variety. |

I’m a vegetarian, so my view is probably a bit different than most. Of course, you’ve probably heard of the freshman meal plan, but in case you haven’t—all freshmen have the same meal plan, which includes breakfast on Monday through Friday, dinner on Sunday through Thursday, and brunch on Saturday and Sunday. All of those meals must be eaten at the Marketplace, which is decent. Not good, but not bad either. My favorite is Alpine Bagels, which is a café over on West in the Bryan Center (the student union for upperclassmen). |

Did You Know? All on-campus restaurants and cafeterias accept food points ($1 equals 1 point). Duke has a system that off-campus restaurants also deliver food paid for on points. This means pizza, steaks, subs, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Italian, Mexican, and so on, are all delivered to your door without you having to dish up extra dough.
