  • Parking Illegally
  • Vandalizing school property

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

On the whole, Duke students are not uproariously raucous or unruly, so the police and University are correspondingly lenient. Although students are occasionally caught doing unlawful things, police aren’t likely to jump out from behind the sofa as you lift that plastic cup for your first guilty sip. One exception is the North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE), which is a group of undercover cops that will make arrests for underage drinking at off-campus locations. Just another reminder: when you choose to go off campus, be smart about it.

East Campus is a dry campus, and RAs will write up students for drinking. Alcohol is permitted on West and Central Campuses, and parties will only get shut down if there is truly insane behavior going on (binge drinking to alcohol poisoning to excessive noise on a weeknight). On the whole, Duke police are entirely reasonable; they're lenient enough to let college students be, while strict enough to keep them safe. One thing the Duke administration is serious and strict about is academic integrity. The Duke Community Standard (the University's version of an honor code) is emphasized regularly, and cheating or plagiarism in any form is not tolerated.

Strict but Fair

Though punishments are served when necessary, safety is the priority. If your friend is in need of medical attention, you are free to contact campus security with no fear of getting yourself in trouble and only a minor note on your friend's file.

NO RULES!!!!

Duke only worries about plagiarism and cheating. Unless you're doing something explicitly dangerous or a more violent crime, you will often get a slap on the wrist if you're caught at all. People often brag about drinking out of solo cups in front of police officers, and as long as you are with friends and not passed out or acting belligerent, you will be ok. Drugs are less tolerated, but once again that's if you get caught. People often stash liquor in their fridges, even on east campus which is supposedly "Dry".
