College Prowler Take

The drug scene at Duke is pretty comfortable and not too pushy. If you want them, you can find them. If you don’t, you shouldn’t have to worry about it. Student responses reflect that most students are aware that there are drugs on campus, but no one seems threatened by it. It’s almost impossible to get through college without a whiff of something grassy, but alcohol is more prevalent and widely used than any illegal substance. Of course, alcohol plays a major role in the Duke social scene, but I dare you to find me a college where that’s not the case. (No, BYU doesn’t count.)

Based on how pervasive the drug scene is, Duke gets reasonably high marks. Duke students can get through college with as much or as little drug use as they decide upon. There will always be the opportunity to use alcohol and drugs, especially if your group of friends uses them, but the pressure and prevalence of drug use shouldn’t scare anyone away from Duke.

There are rumors that fly around occasionally about certain groups or certain people that do hard drugs, but the use of marijuana is more common. This is definitely not a campus-wide activity, but there is also not a "typical" person that smokes pot.

Drinking is widespread. A lot of people smoke marijuana, and people definitely experiment with other drugs. I would say it is more than an occasional thing. It is pretty behind-the-scenes though---you'd only come across it if you were looking for it.

Drugs are there if you want them. Besides alcohol, weed is the most prevalent, but you will never be peer-pressured to do a drug that you don't want to do. Coke is present, but it is underground. That is the only hard drug you hear about.

Alcohol is by far the most common drug of choice, and I think a lot of people take their drinking way too far. A few people smoke. I don’t take part in any of that, though, so I don’t know exactly what’s going on.
