Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

A unique and time-honored college atmosphere is often lacking in Durham, and the same holds true for its local eateries. This is not to say that you can’t find a diamond in the rough here and there because there are quaint, little restaurants on Ninth Street, such as Elmo’s and Cinelli’s, that are loved by students throughout the Triangle area. Admittedly, a lot of students rarely travel far off campus for much of their dining (though this may be as much a product of Duke’s seclusion as it is the quality of food), but there are rewards for those who choose to venture out into the wide world of Raleigh-Durham and Chapel Hill to explore the tastes.

The primary chain restaurants are available in Durham, as well as the unique, regional establishments—so there’s no shortage of places to eat. Finding somewhere fun is seldom a problem for Duke students as long as they are willing to try somewhere new! The South is the home of soul food, and students will regret it someday if they don’t live a little and dig in.

Great Food Off Campus

There's a ton of local restaurants from Mexican to Thai that's within walking distance. Or you can call deliver and pay for it using food points (Merchants on Points). However, it can be expensive.

Freshman Eating Options

There is a string of restaurants that are within a 5-10 minutes walk from the freshman dorms. So it is very easy to find a place to eat off campus. For non-vegetarians, Bali Hai is a pretty good and cheap place to go eat. As long as you learn how to stack your food, you can potentially get as much as you care to eat.

There are also several places within a 5-10 minutes diving distance. If you like real Chinese food, Li Ming's is a good place to go. Li Ming's is also an asian supermarket, so you could buy to fulfill all your asian food needs.

Most of the Restaurants Are Off East Campus

There is a center call Brightleaf Square that has a number of restaurants; most are a little more on the expensive end, but not too bad. We also have" merchants on points", which are restaurants near campus that will deliver and you can use your food points! Many freshmen go to Cosmic Cantina for late night Mexican, and also Torrero's during the day. 9th Street and downtown (both closer to east than west campus) have some good options, but there are also some good restaurants on Erwin Road (right near west campus).
