Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Duke doesn’t have great parking. You might even be tempted to say "parking sucks." But what university does manage to fit thousands of parking spots behind dorms and classrooms while maintaining the beauty of a campus? It is tempting to criticize Duke’s poor planning in regards to the terrible state of parking on campus. After all, Duke took out some old parking lots to add new buildings, which any fool can tell you will not help the parking situation. At times, students get so frustrated that parking illegally right in the middle of the traffic circle really doesn’t sound like a bad idea. In short, bringing a car has its perks, but it's not necessarily the best way to go.

Parking is mentioned again and again as one of Duke’s weak points. The fact that every student automatically qualifies for parking is a bit disturbing—do they actually know how many people they are promising spaces to? Obviously, bad parking should not be the reason you choose not to attend Duke. However, if you do decide to come, you should know about the situation beforehand. That being said, there are some bright spots with parking; Central Campus apartments and most East Campus dorms come to mind.

The Blue Zone Is Stupid

East and central campus have great parking, but living on west (which is most convenient) also comes with the worst parking. On game days people have to move their cars and finding a good spot in the first lot is almost impossible.

Need a Car

If you want to survive at Duke, you need a car. The campus becomes a bubble, so you will need to get out every now and then.
