Best Ways to Get Around Town

  • Bum a ride from a friend
  • Take a bus-they're not the best, but they'll do
  • Walk

How to Get to the Airport

  • A cab ride to the airport costs about $25.
  • Get a ride from a friend
  • Take a Duke shuttle-before and after holidays, Duke offers free to shuttles to the airport, leaving from the East and West Campus bus stops
  • Take a taxi

College Prowler Take

Duke’s own campus transportation system is well-run, extremely safe, clean, and efficient. Some of the bus drivers are obviously not excited about driving around a bunch of rich kids on the same route day after day, but who can blame them? The Durham system is another matter. If (having ignored all the best advice) you venture into Durham on the buses, we will not be responsible for you or your whereabouts thereafter. Please, please wait for a friend.

Most students carpool or take a taxi if they need to get to the airport. Many take the Robertson Scholars bus or have a friend drive them if they want to get to Chapel Hill. For movies and restaurants, students normally walk or take their cars. Durham certainly isn’t known for its fast and efficient transportation system. However, if you’re feeling desperate, brave, or just plain dumb, go ahead and give it a try.

I think that the Durham Area...

I think that the Durham Area Transportation Authority runs buses near East Campus, but I don’t think that much of anyone ever uses them. Most people travel by their own cars or friends’ cars. That would be my recommendation because I’ve heard that the buses aren’t very safe.

Public transportation is terribly inconvenient and expensive. However, companies off campus are slowly trickling in to remedy this problem. For example, a van will now take students to anywhere in the RDU area for a named price. However, I’m not sure how reliable this service is.

I’ve never used public transportation, and I doubt many other Duke students have. The campus system is good, and it’s usually reliable. There is also a bus that runs from Duke to UNC regularly.

I’ve never used public transportation. The transportation between West and East is convenient and useful. That’s all that matters.

The campus buses are convenient,...

The campus buses are convenient, but the Durham public transportation is awful. There are few routes, and they are usually not going where you want to go. This is not really a problem for the Duke students, though. There really isn’t any need to go anywhere in Durham, so it doesn’t matter that they can’t get there. The campus really is their own little city for four years.
