Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

For the most part, students appear satisfied with their academic experience at Duquesne University. Professors make themselves available to the student body, and most will go out of their way to help their students. There are, of course, a few exceptions to this assessment, but they are generally few and far between.

Duquesne offers a satisfactory student-to-professor ratio. This allows upper-level courses to get smaller as they move up in intensity. The academic experience is challenging, but fair. Many new students make the mistake of thinking that the courses here at Duquesne will be a breeze. However, after one or two semesters of hard work, reality begins to set in. Duquesne’s professors are extremely knowledgeable and expect students to put forth a strong effort into attendance and coursework. If a student chooses to do otherwise, he or she may struggle at this university.

Few Peopple Take It Seriously

While the classes themselves are often good, few students take them seriously. People rarely show up, don't do homework, and then wonder why they fail the course. A lot of people that come here clearly are coming to get a degree, not an education. If you come with the intention of learning, you can learn a lot, though. Professors notice the students that really care and will help them along if they need help. It's pretty easy to make Dean's List, which can look good when applying for jobs.

Biology at Duquesne

I am currently enrolled at Duquesne University as a freshman biology major. I am also applying to other schools to transfer because I am unhappy with my experience here. I commute to school, and regret my decision to not live in the dorms. However I feel like the teachers do not take into account the needs of commuter students, when the require us to attend late night lectures, or complete homework assignments that require us to spend much time on campus outside of class. I also feel like the workload is bearable, but is much easier for students who live in the dorm. I plan to transfer to a different four year university and become a resident student.
