Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most students are quick to point out the odd athletic situation at Duquesne: the basketball team is “not that good,” but the games are well attended, while the football team is “very good,” yet without much of a following. Beyond football and basketball, Duquesne offers a wide variety of varsity sports; however, they boast even lower attendance than football and basketball. The general consensus is that, except for the most hardcore of fans, few students concern themselves with sports at Duquesne.

The Duq’s basketball games continue to remain a source of entertainment for many students. Other sports have very little following. Duquesne seems to recognize this and does not push attendance much. It seems that more alumni, local fans, and parents of players attend games than do students. Intramural and club sports are available and are well received.

Let's Go Dukes

Duquesne has fabulous men's and women's basketball teams. Games at the Palumbo Center are regularly packed with students. Duquesne also utilizes Rooney Field off of A-Walk for football, lacrosse, and soccer practices, and people also attend those games. Although basketball is the big deal at Duquesne, there are other supporters of other teams.

Duquesne Athletics

The basketball team has a great following and the games are a great time with many students in attendance. Though the football field is small, the team was co-champions this year, and the games are a blast.

Most Popular Sports

Men’s basketball is the most popular sporting event at Duquesne. Football is not nearly as popular as men’s basketball, but the field is usually filled during home games.

Most Overlooked Teams

Duquesne’s football team and women’s lacrosse are highly overlooked. They are both skilled, yet they do not seem to carry much interest with most of the student body.

School Spirit

Duquesne students are very proud of their school. It is not uncommon to see half the student body sporting some article of Duquesne clothing. Athletic events could use a larger turnout, but solid fans are proud of their teams. Most students proudly answer, “Duquesne University,” when asked where they attend school. Alumni are scattered throughout the city and country, and they continue to remain proud of where they attended college—especially with the School of Law.

Getting Tickets

Tickets for sporting events are easy to get and often free for students. Football games are usually free, and basketball tickets are under $10 with a student ID. Other varsity sports can be watched without buying a ticket.
