College Prowler Take

Most students are quick to point out the odd athletic situation at Duquesne: the basketball team is “not that good,” but the games are well attended, while the football team is “very good,” yet without much of a following. Beyond football and basketball, Duquesne offers a wide variety of varsity sports; however, they boast even lower attendance than football and basketball. The general consensus is that, except for the most hardcore of fans, few students concern themselves with sports at Duquesne.

The Duq’s basketball games continue to remain a source of entertainment for many students. Other sports have very little following. Duquesne seems to recognize this and does not push attendance much. It seems that more alumni, local fans, and parents of players attend games than do students. Intramural and club sports are available and are well received.

Basketball is the biggest sport...

Basketball is the biggest sport here. Our Duquesne Dukes made it to the A-10 conference Championship game, but we lost to Temple. We also made it to the NIT for the first time in 15 years but lost to Virginia Tech in double overtime. Our team is young and on the rise. We're going to be a really good team in the next few years.

We have a good football team, but they’re basically the big bullies in their conference—no team can match them. I guess that’s why no one watches. The basketball team is in a good conference, but can’t keep up with the Atlantic 10.

There isn’t much school spirit for sports. Good football team, but no one watches. Actually, most of the sports teams do well, but no one goes to the games!

We have intramural sports? I wasn’t even aware.

Varsity sports aren’t well...

Varsity sports aren’t well attended. Basketball gets an okay turnout—whenever the coach comes to the dorms to ask people to come. The football team is good, but no one cares. My friends and I can be walking down A-Walk on a Sunday and barely notice the game. Everyone would rather watch the Steelers.

Gyms and Facilities

  • Duquesne Power Center - The Duquesne Power Center has over 80,000 square feet devoted to recreational facilities. It has modern cardio-fitness exercise equipment and each one has a TV built in. There are basketball courts, racquetball courts, and an indoor track. There are locker rooms, exercise rooms, and dance and other exercise classes held. There are two weight rooms that have both a mix of free weights and weight lifting machines. The facilities are really nice and clean. Everything is new and there are rarely any lines. The only time you have to wait for a piece of equipment is around dinner time.

Getting Tickets

Tickets for sporting events are easy to get and often free for students. Football games are usually free, and basketball tickets are under $10 with a student ID. Other varsity sports can be watched without buying a ticket.

Most Popular Sports

Men’s basketball is the most popular sporting event at Duquesne. Football is not nearly as popular as men’s basketball, but the field is usually filled during home games.

Most Overlooked Teams

Duquesne’s football team and women’s lacrosse are highly overlooked. They are both skilled, yet they do not seem to carry much interest with most of the student body.
