Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Duquesne students stress the invisibility of the drug scene
on campus. As with most other universities, there is some drug use. If one is into that sort of thing, they should have few problems finding what they want. Alcohol is the most widely used drug on campus, with marijuana following behind in popularity. There is some tolerance among RAs and the police regarding alcohol use, but they do not stand for illicit drug use.

The most important issue regarding drug use is the lack of peer pressure. Drugs and alcohol are available and used by students, but those who choose to focus on other hobbies will not be forced into a harmful situation. Students generally turn a blind eye towards drug use, which is not hard, considering it is not readily visible among the student body. RAs and the police keep their eyes open for any illegal activities, and they will act if the situation requires it.

Drugs Not Huge

Drugs at Duquesne are fairly limited in usage. The only one you'd encounter on a somewhat "regular" basis (at parties on weekends and such) is marijuana. Other than that, harder and more dangerous drugs are very hush-hush at Duquesne. Only if you know someone who knows someone, etc., can you get your hands on something really strong. Drinking, however, is a much more popular and prevalent occurrence on and off campus.

It's there but not too bad

Other schools are definitely worse. There are no parties held on campus at all because you will be caught without a doubt. All parties are held in the Hill District, South Side, Pitt, or CMU. Yes, people smoke weed as well, but you will find that anywhere. Most people go off-campus to smoke it because everyone who has smoked it in the dorms has been caught - if you're going to smoke, don't be stupid about it. There are police officers on campus and whether it be people who live there or RA's, someone will call them. People drink in the dorms as well (especially when it is winter), but the RA's are also pretty good at catching that. If you're caught you have a meeting with the RD and you are usually sent to a DU Cares class after that (an alcohol-awareness/safety class, since the university doesn't make you take one when you first come like most schools do). It takes a LOT of write-ups for this stuff to get kicked out of school (I know a kid who did get kicked out, but only after he got 17 citations).

Safety

I would have to say I have seen no drugs on campus. It is pretty strict. Especially dorms, do not even try to smoke you will get caught. Its not as bad in apartments though. Alcohol policy is decently strict, you are suppose to sign in alcohol if your 21, but no one really does. As long as you are not being stupid you will be fine. Everyone knows that people drink, as long as you arent having a rager in your room you should be fine. But do not leave alcohol freely out in your room if your under 21. Policy also depends on how strict your RA is.
