Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Pittsburgh is a friendly city to people from all walks of life. Those from smaller towns, cities, or rural areas should not feel overwhelmed. Most Pittsburgh natives are friendly and willing to help. The Hill District, according to Duquesne’s students, should be avoided after dark. It is not overly crime ridden, but as with any other urban setting, one can expect one or two “bad” areas. Overall, however, Pittsburgh’s many diversions and its friendly residents offer prospective students a pleasant place to live.

There is no shortage of atmosphere or things to do in Pittsburgh. Although many of the downtown attractions close early, the surrounding areas stay open late. From the University of Pittsburgh and CMU to the clubs, bars, and eateries in the South Side, Station Square, or the Strip District, a Duquesne student should never be bored. Pittsburgh is overflowing with shopping areas, dining spots, and other attractions. One should definitely visit the famous Carnegie Museums of Art and History, as well as the Carnegie Science Center and the Andy Warhol Museum. During the winter, two large ski resorts—Seven Springs and Hidden Valley—are within an hour’s drive from the campus. With all of these wonderful attractions in and around the city, one can definitely call Pittsburgh a lively place.

Get Off Campus

Not much going on at the campus, but nightlife is better in Oakland near Pitt/CMU and on the Southside.

Nice Atmosphere...If You Can Get There

Pittsburgh has a lot of great things to do, especially if you go down to Oakland, Southside, or The Waterfront. The only major problem is getting there, which I guess is more of a transportation concern, but that kind of affects whether or not you can actually enjoy the atmosphere. Right by the Consol, which is where the Pens play and it also hosts a lot of concerts. The Cultural District is a 20 minute walk downtown, and there are always great shows down there. Just don't go to the corner of 5th and Stevenson - there's a bar there, and the people that frequent it are often rude to Duquesne students, particularly if you're a girl. While Duquesne itself doesn't feel like you're in a city, remember that as soon as you step off campus, it IS the city! Be smart and stand your ground.

Pittsburgh Is a Great Area to Go to School in!

Being a medium sized city, Pittsburgh is easily navigated and a great city for walking. There's always somewhere delicious to eat and plenty of entertainment close by. There's 3 sports teams so there's almost always a game of some sort to go to. Malls are within a 30 minute drive, or trolley ride. The museums are some of the best I've ever been to, and admission is affordable.
