Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Pittsburgh is a friendly city to people from all walks of life. Those from smaller towns, cities, or rural areas should not feel overwhelmed. Most Pittsburgh natives are friendly and willing to help. The Hill District, according to Duquesne’s students, should be avoided after dark. It is not overly crime ridden, but as with any other urban setting, one can expect one or two “bad” areas. Overall, however, Pittsburgh’s many diversions and its friendly residents offer prospective students a pleasant place to live.

There is no shortage of atmosphere or things to do in Pittsburgh. Although many of the downtown attractions close early, the surrounding areas stay open late. From the University of Pittsburgh and CMU to the clubs, bars, and eateries in the South Side, Station Square, or the Strip District, a Duquesne student should never be bored. Pittsburgh is overflowing with shopping areas, dining spots, and other attractions. One should definitely visit the famous Carnegie Museums of Art and History, as well as the Carnegie Science Center and the Andy Warhol Museum. During the winter, two large ski resorts—Seven Springs and Hidden Valley—are within an hour’s drive from the campus. With all of these wonderful attractions in and around the city, one can definitely call Pittsburgh a lively place.

Not a real "city school"

Although Duquesne is technically in the City of Pittsburgh, students like myself really never felt that way. The campus is located on it's own piece of land, better known as "the bluff." During my freshman year at Duquesne, I never felt like I was ever in the city of Pittsburgh, I just felt like I was at Duquesne. Looking at schools like the University of Pittsburgh, true city schools, I much prefer Duquesne's atmosphere. For one, the campus feel is so much greater at Duquesne (since we actually have one) and there is also a much greater sense of community. People are extremely friendly, the Power Center is the best gym, and classes are great. Great atmosphere, you will see all types of people.

The Perfect Balance

Our campus is sequestered on a hill but just minutes away from downtown Pittsburgh and other Pittsburgh neighborhoods brimming with fun things to do and other universities to connect with. Pittsburgh is the perfect balance between a big city and a smal town.
