Parking Permits

It is easy to get a parking permit, but the policies are changing as more freshmen are brought onto campus yearly. Beyond that, obtaining a parking permit can be very costly, stemming from the limited number of parking spaces on campus and its urban setting. Your best bet is applying for a space before August of the planned year of attendance.

College Prowler Take

A vast majority of students, professors, and employees describe the parking situation at Duquesne as unacceptable and growing worse each year. These conditions seem to fit a campus of only 40 acres set in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh. Space is very limited and permits are pricey. If you plan on bringing a car—or require one as a commuter—understand that parking will be a daily annoyance. The most efficient idea might be to inquire early about obtaining a parking permit, preferably the $500 garage permit.

Parking fines are another issue; if a student doesn’t have a permit and parks on the surface during the school week, he or she is guaranteed a fine. The fines start at $20 and increase with each additional violation. Most students advise leaving the car at home unless absolutely necessary. Public transportation around Pittsburgh is easily accessible and inexpensive. Perhaps this option might serve as a more effective and economic method of transportation.

I commute, and I get a ride in to class every day. Parking on campus is just too much of a hassle and way too expensive. All that money for a shot at parking? Are you kidding me?

If I had been a commuter, I think I would have rethought coming to Duquesne. The parking is insane, and I don’t think Duquesne gives a crap about the conditions. They get their money, and some people get to park, so they keep their hands off of the situation.

If you don’t need a car, don’t bring one. You’ll save $500 and your sanity. If you need a car only for the weekends, public parking in Forbes is okay. It’s usually $5 for the day.
