College Prowler Take

Although Duquesne is situated right smack in the middle of downtown Pittsburgh and the Hill District, one never really feels in harm’s way. The Duquesne Police take their job very seriously and respond quickly to any emergency. They are friendly with the students and do not pose a roadblock to fun. Anyone coming in or out of the dorms must either scan their ID card or have a resident sign them in if they do not live there. Sign-in procedures keep things safe, but many students find them annoying and devise ways to get around them. UPMC Mercy Hospital is adjacent to the campus, and Duquesne students have easy access to its facilities.

Duquesne’s campus seems isolated from the rest of the city, but in a good way. Students, for the most part, may come and go as they please. If something poses a threat on campus, the police promptly respond. Residence halls are extremely safe, and both they and the entire campus are dotted with security cameras. The front desks of the residence halls are monitored at all times, nearly year round. Violent physical or sexual attacks are almost unheard of here. What little drug dealing and use occurring is usually kept quiet and out of sight. The general consensus of most of the students here at Duquesne reveals an overall feeling of comfort and security. One can learn all about incidents at Duquesne by picking up an issue of the Duquesne Duke; the “Police Briefs” section features and pokes fun at the few petty offenses that take place on or near campus.

The police keep those who shouldn’t be here out. They don’t hassle students unless they’re dealing crack in public or something—which I don’t think happens here.

I’ve come to know many of the police by name. They don’t go on power trips, but simply walk or drive around and keep things cool. I’ve never had any major problems, and have heard of very few. You’d never know Duquesne was in downtown Pittsburgh. It’s like an island up here.

Campus security is very good, but not suffocating. The Duquesne Police make their presence known and are very friendly. They always offer assistance to students. In the evening, students can call security if they want to be escorted in the dark.

All the dorms have people working at the front desks, and no one is allowed to enter the dorms until they swipe their student ID card. Each dorm room has its own specific card, so only people that live in that building can enter by swiping. The rest can either sneak in (which I understand has become very hard to do), or they must be signed in.

Did You Know?

On Sept. 17, 2006, a shooting occurred on Duquesne University’s campus following a student dance on campus. Five Duquesne basketball players were injured. Several players agreed the shooting occurred after a male, who was not a student, became angry when a woman he accompanied to the dance began talking with the players. The campus responding with a series of new security measures to continue a safe environment on campus, including upgrades on campus surveillance cameras, additional officers on campus, a text messaging alert system, and metal detectors to be used at campus events. That April, the men’s basketball team received the 2006 Most Courageous Award at the NCAA Final Four tournament.
