Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
- At least half of the residents go home on the weekends.
- Bring a really heavy coat and lots of cold weather gear.
- Buy your books online first semester before spending too much at the Barnes & Noble on campus.
- Duquesne sometimes likes to turn the air-conditioning on in the winter and the heat on in summer.
- Everything downtown closes before anyone is ready to leave.
- Get to know the campus rules!
- How to build an igloo come January.
- It's very windy on campus.
- Parking fines are how much?
- Quiet hours? What quiet hours?
- Sign up for housing very early, look up the different activities and associations. Get to know your teachers, print assignments, and go to class everyday!!!
- Sign up for parking passes as early as you can - the parking garage spots fill fast, so you don't want to miss out.
Tips to Succeed
- At the beginning of the year, discuss with your roommate how clean you expect the room to be.
- Be prepared to get to work after the first semester of freshman year.
- Be yourself. If you were someone you didn’t like in high school, now is the time to be someone you like.
- Do not, under any circumstances, plagiarize or cheat. Students have been expelled for doing so.
- Enjoy everything you can! The four years go by so fast. Get involved in everything from Greek life to clubs. Study abroad if you can.
- Go to class! Watch challenging or correcting professors some of them are not perseptive to it.
- Go to class.
- Go to your RA if there is ever a problem.
- If you live in Towers, leave 20 minutes early. You will have trouble getting an elevator in the mornings.
- If you think someone might have alcohol poisoning, act. A life is not worth a possible inconvenience. RAs and the police can be understanding, and you may save a life.
- If you're not from Pittsburgh, get out and explore the city. There are so many great things out there to find that you may not read about in the campus brochures. Try to interact and meet with people with a lot of different culture's and learn from other people's experiences on campus.
- Pay attention when in class.
- Set rules with your roommate; for example, involving visitations of the opposite sex.
- Set your priorities. Put homework ahead of fun, as hard as that may be. You’ll have lots of time to party, but only limited time to study and get that paper done.
- This is not high school. Classes are fair, but can be very challenging. No one is at fault for laziness except you.
Urban Legends
- Don't walk in the inner statue of the Jesus statue located near Rockwell Hall. It is campus superstition that walking through the inner circle leads to all failing grades.
- St. Anne's is apparently haunted on the fifth floor girls side.
- The Lavel House where the Priests on campus live is thought to have been used as a safe house for the Underground Railroad.
- The only real urban legend that continues to gain widespread interest refers to Duquesne’s ranking of number three on Playboy’s list of “Hottest Universities.” The truth of this rumor remains up in the air. However, most students would agree the rumor seems quite believable.
School Spirit
Duquesne students are very proud of their school. It is not uncommon to see half the student body sporting some article of Duquesne clothing. Athletic events could use a larger turnout, but solid fans are proud of their teams. Most students proudly answer, “Duquesne University,” when asked where they attend school. Alumni are scattered throughout the city and country, and they continue to remain proud of where they attended college—especially with the School of Law.
