Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There’s no denying that at the core of a great education is a solid teaching staff. While students at Earlham may whine about the Residence Life personnel or this or that new policy, we consistently stand behind the great work of those who inspire and challenge us every day. At Earlham, all classes are taught by professors, and every department is chock full of great educators who are willing to work their hardest to give students the tools they need to succeed. Professors have high expectations, but if you’ve gotten behind or don’t really understand the material, most of them are highly available. Individual teaching styles aside, Earlham professors also almost invariably share the one quality that counts most: a passion for their subject matter. A great proportion of the teaching staff lives within a stone’s throw of campus, as well, and they frequently organize and attend campus events. This means students and faculty get to know one another on a personal basis. Earlham students are notoriously over-involved on campus, so the fact that we really do care about our classes can cause some stressful crunch days. This isn’t to say that studying will completely overtake your waking hours, though. The workload is serious, but not overwhelming. Choose classes you’re really interested in (don’t sweat fulfilling all the gen-ed requirements your first year) so you’ll have more fun learning. If you work hard, you’ll reap the benefits of this inspiring academic community.

Lots of Cool Classes, Not Offered Very Often :/

Earlham has tons of amazing cool classes, like courses on bioethics, ghosts, creative writing on Harry Potter, weaving, museum studies, history of non-violent movements, etc but they aren't offered every semester (or even every year or two years). Also, only one time a semester are most classes offered (ie you can only take museum studies at 2:30 on Wednesdays).

History Major - Yeah!

I love being a history major at Earlham. The program is well-funded, has some of the best teachers on campus, and has a wide variety of history classes concerning almost all parts of the world. The facilities are wonderful (the Social Sciences building was built in 2002) and the workload is challenging, but never overwhelming.

Small Classes and Caring Professors

The biology department is really good. The professors know and care about their students. Some of the required classes in other departments are a waste of time but some of them are unexpectedly interesting and I ended up learning a lot in classes I had originally dismissed. Classes are small and you cannot get away with skipping or not reading the material. Professors know your name and are very receptive to helping and encouraging you. Developing good writing skills is paramount to an Earlham education, which I've found has done me well post-graduation. The biology department prepared me well for graduate school in microbiology, although I wish independent research had been a stronger focus in our curriculum. Overall, a very good and useful education.
