Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Earlham’s dining hall, SAGA, may be all-you-can-eat, but good luck getting your money’s worth. As a freshman, you will be required to purchase a 19-meal-per-week plan, which you can only use at SAGA or for meal exchange at the Coffee Shop on weeknights. The salad bar, complete with baby spinach, fresh veggies, feta cheese, oil and balsamic vinegar, provides all the necessary ingredients for a snazzy and satisfying semi-gourmet meal. Most mornings, you can order eggs to be cooked as you like, and at lunch and dinnertime, toasters, microwaves, and two frying pans can help you get creative with a classy grilled cheese or stir-fry with rice. If you miss home cooking, fill up a to-go box with some raw ingredients to make a meal in your dorm kitchen. SAGA food isn’t bad at first, but it gets redundant after a while. Fortunately, as you move up in the world, you can drop your meal plan altogether (if you’re not still living in a dorm). This is especially useful if you are interested in joining the Co-op meal plan, which provides delicious and healthy lunches five days a week. All in all, semi-greasy SAGA food will get you through your first year and give you time to decide for yourself how you want to eat for the next three years. Even if you don’t cook, delicious treats are there if you know where to look for them. Don’t miss out on a free gourmet meal on Farm Days (every Saturday at Miller Farm) or at Sabbat dinner in the JCC on Friday nights.

As Expected

I hate when people complain about this. Our dining hall has many options for a college buffet style. We always have vegan and vegetarian options. It hasn't gotten repetitive for me yet, but I've only been here a semester. We love our coffee shop too and we have meal exchange, which means that if you miss the dining hall meal time, you can get Subway whenever at the cafe.

Jazzman's Coffee Shop

There is a wide selection of drinks to be had. The seasonal options are varied (Pumpkin Spice and Peppermint!). However, they often run out of the most popular drinks, such as Chai Tea Lattes. Their coffee is decent, or at least better than what they serve in the dining halls. Their espresso is not very good, meaning lattes and cappuccinos could be better. Prices are decent for the quality.

SAGA Sucks

The food on campus is often terrible. However, you can skip a meal and go to the cafe, where you can get something for meal exchange, which is often much better.

Special Options A flexible lunch plan at Clear Creek Food Co-Op is a great option for vegetarians and vegans trying to get more variety and flavor in their diet. To-go boxes are available for students to fill up at Saga on weekdays when they don’t have time to sit and eat. Additionally, the Eats-to-Go Program offers a selection of lunch foods, including salads, veggie options, and wraps, which students can order in advance and pick up at the time they designate.
Did You Know?
  • Once a semester, as exams draw near, Saga opens for moonlight breakfast. All students are invited to this late-night feast (even if they are not on the meal plan), where they are served pancakes and bacon, among other breakfast favorites, by professors and other faculty.
  • The Coffee Shop offers a "Meal Exchange" for those on meal plans. Students may choose to eat dinner in the Coffee Shop (from a preselected menu which includes a six-inch Subway sub) in place of the traditional dinner meal served in SAGA.
