College Prowler Take
There are a number of labs on campus, one of which is open 24 hours with ID card swipe access. When the going gets tough at the end of the semester, the Wildman Science Library computer lab is also opened for 24-hour use. If you’re the procrastinating type, don’t be surprised at the demand for computers at 4 a.m. with finals week fast approaching. For those students who can’t focus in the labs, Lilly Library offers laptop computers for checkout. The wireless network is available in most campus houses, academic buildings, both libraries, and even in the Heart (Earlham’s central courtyard). High-speed Internet is standard in dorms, and network folders can be conveniently accessed through an FTP address. This means picking up work on a dorm computer that you started in the library is no problem.
Having your own PC gives you more options, but if your system is unreliable, it may be best to leave it behind. Wherever you compose your drafts, free printing will be available in all computer labs. Plenty of students who rely on campus facilities are perfectly successful. Whether the purchase is worth it for you comes down largely to personal preference and flexibility. Besides, there’s no rule saying that just because you bring it, you have to use your computer for more than AOL Instant Messenger and your 10-hour playlist.

I would recommend bringing a computer if you have one or are planning on buying one. During the day, it’s no problem getting a computer in the libraries, but right before breaks and during midterms and finals, it’s near impossible, in my experience. |

Computer labs can be crowed during finals time, but you don’t really need your own computer. If for some reason the lab is full, you could borrow someone else’s computer. |

The computer network is okay. The labs aren’t crowded, except at crunch times. I would bring my own computer if you like to surf the Internet after midnight or before 8 a.m. There are chunks of time when the network crashes, and many teachers are now resorting to using Moodle or other class aides that are online. |

Everyone complains about our network, but I have no complaints, really. It’s rarely down, depending on what dorm or house you live in, and it’s not that slow. I have my own computer that I use, so I haven’t personally experienced the annoyance of our computer labs, but the word on the street is they’re crowded a lot of the time, especially at the middle and end of semesters. I would definitely say bring your own computer if you have one. |

I never brought my own computer and never had a problem using the labs. There are two 24-hour labs accessible to all students at any time of the day, and I never once submitted a paper late because of a shortage of computers. Labs will be packed 24/7 during finals times, but that is the same everywhere. |

Did You Know?
While Earlham does not block Kazaa, Morpheus, eMule, or programs related to peer-to-peer file sharing, there is limited bandwidth available to each student, and downloading copyrighted materials is not permitted.
Sophos antivirus software is mandatory software for connection to the Earlham network. Students cannot connect to the network without the most recent Windows updates and Sophos software.
Earlham professors are expanding their use of a Web-based academic site called Moodle, used to post and collect assignments, distribute readings, upload useful online links, make PowerPoint presentations available, and plan or track progress over the semester.
The Lilly Library circulation desk provides laptops that can be checked out by students for use in the library.
Four new Dells were recently placed in Earlham Hall’s main lobby for accessible, around-the-clock use.
