School Slang
  • "I feel like...": Get used to it. It's what everyone on campus uses to preface what they have to say whenever it might be controversial.
  • (The) Quake: Reference to Earlham's mascot, the Hustlin' Quaker; most frequently heard at athletic events
  • Brick City: College-owned student and faculty housing to the south of campus
  • The Burrow: Barrett Hall's basement
  • College Ave.: The street that parallels the College on the east side; home to most College-owned houses
  • College Meeting for Worship: Weekly Quaker meeting in the meeting house Sundays at 11 a.m. Students and faculty are often invited to share their message.
  • Consensus: A Quaker practice of decision-making. Love it or hate it, everyone's got to agree with it.
  • Convenor: The leader of a campus group (known in most schools as the president)
  • Convocation: Lecture event held alternate Wednesdays at 1 p.m. Cookies and punch follow the Q&A section.
  • EH: Earlham Hall
  • ESG: Earlham Student Government
  • The Hash: The weekly Saturday morning beer-drinking escapade
  • The Heart: The courtyard that lies in the center of campus
  • Hoosier: A person from Indiana
  • LBC: The Landrum Bolling Center, a newly renovated academic building on the north side of campus
  • Lily: Lily Library
  • Moodle: Web-based academic resource
  • OA: Olvey/Andis Residence Hall
  • P&P: Principles and Practices. Especially as a first-year, you're not going to hear the end of this "living document" regarding Earlham's ethical intentions.
  • PAGS: Peace and global studies, one of Earlham's more unique majors
  • Quaker Points: Meal plan dollars which can be used at Jazzman's and the Coffee Shop
  • RPD: Richmond Police Department; avoid at all costs
  • SAB: The Student Activities Board which plans weekend events
  • SAGA: The main dining hall
  • Saga Shopping: Illicitly making the most of your block meal by assembling a back-pocket doggy bag
  • SciLi: Science Library (gets cultish after a while in late hours of the night)
  • SJC: Student Judicial Committee
  • Web DB: A personalized online program used to register for classes, look up student and faculty contact info, send out class-wide e-mails, and reference your cumulative transcript and progress reports
  • Wilderness: A popular extracurricular and minor on campus
  • Womyn's Center: A space on campus open only to those identifying themselves as women
Traditions
  • Baccalaureate: For the past 35 years, the senior class has planned their own Baccalaureate (the speakers and events to precede commencement), and instead of hiring an outside celebrity, they select a favorite faculty member as the speaker.
  • Bundy 500: Now that spring semester no longer runs through Memorial Day weekend and Bundy has gotten a facelift, this famed tradition has finally retired. Yet the excitement of cockroach races down the halls of Bundy (in the spirit of the nearby Indy 500) lives on as a fond Earlham memory.
  • Convocation: While today's students know Convocation as the bi-weekly speaker series that draws the Earlham community into Goddard Auditorium every other Wednesday at 1 p.m., the tradition goes back to the College's founding, when students were required to attend worship.
  • Farm Day: Every Saturday, the people at Miller Farm (one of the theme houses on campus) hold Farm Day. Those who wish to participate are picked up at the Clear Creek Co-Op and head down to the farm to do a few hours of good old-fashioned farm work, including construction, gardening, apple-picking at the orchard, and general upkeep. Payment comes in the form of a delicious free lunch (not to mention the satisfaction of putting in a real day's work).
  • The International Festival: Since the 1980s, Earlham's large international student body has collaborated on a week-long celebration, complete with eclectic cultural events, presentations, and foods.
  • Little Two: Every Tuesday night between 11 p.m. and midnight, students got pumped up about the Little Two bicycle races, in which two-person teams share one bicycle in a relay race around the Heart. The tradition was complete with its own song that students belt into the night air.
  • Winter Candle Lighting : Every winter, as the fall semester draws to a close, students and faculty meet at Stout Meetinghouse and light luminaria candles. The tiny lights encircle the Heart and line both sides of the main drive out National Road.
Urban Legends
  • The Athletic and Wellness Center is supposedly haunted by a ghost who played basketball every night at Trueblood Field Center.
  • The Joseph Moore House on College Avenue is haunted, despite its recent renovation to house the Public Affairs offices.
Favorite Things To Do
On alternating Wednesdays at 1 p.m., the campus shuts down for Convocation. Professors and speakers from off campus speak in the Goddard Auditorium, and punch and cookies follow. Also, on sunny days, it's nice to hang out or join a pick-up soccer or Frisbee game on the Heart. Procrastinating after dinner? Watch a free movie in Dennis, or check one out from Runyan desk. Want to move your body? Play pool or Ping-Pong at Runyan, or go for a swim or catch a yoga class at the Wellness Center. Finally, get some work done at the library, or meet with your group project partners in the Coffee Shop with an iced skim latte.

Did You Know?
In a classic prank which took place before the interstate was built, travelers heading east along Route 40 after the Indy 500 were directed off the main road and around Earlham's campus with "borrowed" road construction signs.
