Did You Know?
By this point, you're probably not surprised to hear that Earlham is a Greek-free zone. Thanks in no small part to EC's Quaker values, fraternities and sororities have always been absent from campus life since the College was founded in 1847. Back in the 19th century, Quakers were not allowed to be a part of "secret, oath-bound societies," like the Freemasons. This opposition to exclusive and elitist organizations continued into the 20th and 21st centuries and kept Earlham free of a Greek system, which was seen as an unnecessary expense and encouraging of alcohol consumption.
