College Prowler Take
Like most things at Earlham, the dating scene is a bit odd. Earlham is notorious amoung some crowds for making people reconsider their heterosexuality, and the student body is generally supportive of students whose romantic lives cross traditional borders. Many Earlham students tend to resist labels, not wanting to tie themselves down to a specific sexual category. Attractive people of all genders make Earlham a place full of possibility and excitement. The small size lends the campus its intimacy, but it is also responsible for claustrophobic dating options. If you go through small ponds fast, be prepared. Standards of beauty at Earlham are not necessarily so standard. Students often value an off-beat style and unique personality over bra size. This isn’t to say we Earlhamites are so high and mighty we are above noticing some nice abs or legs, but makeup and a bottle of bleach might not get you as far here as the University of Miami. As you may have noticed from the quotes, one man’s beauty queen may be another man’s geek-of-the-week. There’s no guarantee you’ll find the girl or guy of your dreams, but Earlham offers a true range of incredible people, some of whom are sure to flip your switches. For the straight crowd, the odds are in favor of the gentlemen, but don’t be too hasty, guys—most EC girls don’t take kindly to over-eager come-ons.

Well, first off, the most common...
Well, first off, the most common complaint about the heterosexual dating scene is that the campus breaks down into about 60 percent women and 40 percent men, which makes for some very frustrated straight/bi women and very happy straight/bi men. I don’t know too much about the homosexual dating scene, although I can only imagine that, with such a small student body to begin with, it’s probably frustrating. |

Earlham is, for sure, one of the...
Earlham is, for sure, one of the ugliest schools ever. Man, oh man! I expected lots of gorgeous, natural-looking ladies and whatnot, but it seems like most people here—well, I don’t know what else to say. Yeah, there are exceptions to that, like everywhere else; there are, however, more attractive women than men at this school. Ladies, keep on shopping. This place is geek heaven. Remember the boys who would write messages to each other in binary during class in HS? Yeah, they’re all here. |

Just like any school, Earlham has...
Just like any school, Earlham has its share of really great, attractive people. Everyone here is so outgoing that it's really easy to meet random people, and the student body is small enough that you're likely to see them again. The guys here, especially, tend to be much less superficial than I'm used to.

I miss the Earlham standards for...
I miss the Earlham standards for attractiveness (and indiscriminate cuddling)! There was just something really refreshing about being somewhere where superficiality was overtly frowned upon. The editorial is dead on --- before leaving Earlham, I lived mostly in blissful ignorance of otherwise common practices, such as women wearing a ton of makeup on a daily basis, bleaching/highlighting their hair, and getting manicures and trendy hairstyles. At Earlham, you are much more likely to see women who never cut their hair (or had a friend do it), only dye it if it's going to be an exciting color, only wear makeup if they feel like it, and don't shave. The men, on the other hand, often wear the same clothes for days on end. Hygiene is not always a given for people of either sex. However, many of these offbeat, unshowered folk are some of the most intriguing, intelligent, and attractive people you'll be lucky enough to meet (including a lot of very attractive lesbians). Just make sure to keep your wits about you, since like anywhere else, sexual violence can happen, and common-sense precautions are always essential.

I think that Earlham women are...
I think that Earlham women are beautiful in a very unconventional way, and I find Earlham guys attractive in an unconventional way, as well. Overall, more women at Earlham would probably identify as feminists than in the general population (probably true among men, as well), and I would say that they are more mature and less catty than the average American female. They also seem to be somewhat less focused on their appearance, although they certainly aren’t immune to society’s preoccupation with beauty (I don’t think anyone is). As I said before, I’d bet that more Earlham guys would identify as feminists than in the general population, but that isn’t to say that they’re saints. I would say that I am surprised when I hear about cases of rape and sexual assault on campus, because part of me expects more from Earlham men. |

FactsBirth Control Available?
Yes - Condoms are often available for free from RAs. They go quick, though, and you can get as many as you want for really cheap from Health Services. Other birth control options are available through the doctor's clinic at Health Services. They will also help you get Plan B.
Social Scene
Earlham students are mostly extroverted, social, and easy-going. Making friends is easy here, and people don't think twice about striking up conversations with strangers. Fluid sociability means that someone who's interesting to you probably won't stay a stranger for long, and social circles overlap a great deal. People enjoy hanging out with friends and usually have fun in more creative, less conventional ways.
Hookups or Relationships?
The romantic and sexual scene on campus is mostly polarized at the opposite extremes. Students either play the random hookup game or seem only weeks away from planning their wedding and naming their children. The gray area in between gets more complicated and tends to get the rumor mill going.
Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls
The campus’s small size means that you don’t have to go out of your way to cross paths with most people on campus on a daily basis. That cute boy or girl in your econ class will probably hold a work-study job somewhere on campus and be involved in a club or sport, as well. To meet potential mates, get involved on campus in whatever interests you most. You’ll have a chance to meet lots of potential friends and dates who can’t help but share common interests. Parties are a good chance to flirt and dance with people you’ve already become more familiar with.
Dress Code
The stereotypical Earlhamite shops at Goodwill, the free box in Runyan, and their roommate's closet, throwing together a "dirty hippy" look with a brush-free hairdo and flip-flops. However, this is only a facet of the population, as many students spend a bit more time and money to coordinate athletic, preppy, and artsy appearances.
