College Prowler Take
Earlham’s Campus Safety and Security Office can be reached 24 hours, and they are an inconspicuous, though reassuring, presence on campus. There are no blue phones or escort services, but the campus’s small size means that security is never far away, and students can’t help but develop a great sense of familiarity with the campus and their peers, evidenced by the many unlocked dorm rooms and bicycles on campus. Earlham prides itself on its sense of community responsibility. Sometimes, however, students can be blinded by the laid-back Earlham attitude and forget that crimes like theft and sexual assault are a reality on all college campuses, no matter how Quakerly they may be. The economy in Richmond has seen better days, but the area around Earlham is mostly homey and residential, and while almost everyone on campus feels safe most of the time, some may not want to walk back to their dorms alone at night or leave their bikes unlocked. While many Richmondites are lovely people, it is not unusual for Earlham students to report seemingly random acts of confrontation or intimidation.
In general, however, students look out for each other and feel safe on and off campus. As most of the hidden dark side of student relations involves alcohol consumption at parties, it’s important to go to parties with friends you can trust. If you take simple precautions, you won’t get bent out of shape staying safe. Crime is minimal, and most of the time, Earlham is like a big extended family.

Earlham is such a tight-knit...
Earlham is such a tight-knit community that it's hard not to feel safe, but the flip-side of that is that many, particularly those who are new to the community, can find it too easy to let their guard down. Just because it feels like one big family doesn't mean not to lock your doors - it's not often, but laptops and other valuables do disappear from time to time. In combination with the very close social groups, the "family feeling" can also mean that Earlham can seem like a very hostile place for those who experience sexual abuse in particular, and the silencing effect is fairly profound.

Security is very good at Earlham....
Security is very good at Earlham. I have never felt unsafe on campus. Security’s primary purpose seems to be busting parties where people are drinking, or coming to people’s dorm rooms to write them up after they are caught drinking by their RA. |

The campus is safe and secure, though there are occasionally thefts of unlocked bikes and such. |

Campus is pretty safe. I mean, you...
Campus is pretty safe. I mean, you aren’t likely to be jumped in a back alley and have your money taken. At the same time, though, you should always be cautious about how much you are drinking at parties and who you are trusting to make sure you get home. The Campus Safety and Security officers are friendly, though sometimes their response time is a little slow. But, then again, when you are one officer and have 1,200 students who call you for everything from being locked out of their dorm room to emergencies, it must be difficult. The card-swipe access to the dorms is nice, but it’s a pain once you only have access to your dorm between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. |
