Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

What some schools say about guys and girls really applies to parties at Earlham: the odds are good, but the goods are odd. If you want to shoot off bottle rockets in the cornfield or go to parties with themes like “Knitting and 40s,” Earlham is for you. Kegs are around at the beginning and end of the year, and you can probably find a chill group of people and go up to the roof of the off-limits Joseph Moore House with you. But like most things at Earlham, the parties are a mix. A party that begins with spiced rum and streaking might end up as a conventional party scene with tequila shots and dancing. You’ll probably know everyone there, which can make for more fun, but also more drama. Don’t do anything you don’t want everyone and their mother to know about by Sunday morning. Keep in mind, Earlham wouldn’t be Earlham if we had good clubs to go to. Part of the adventure, or part of the agony for some, is that you really have to make your own fun in this lonely Midwestern town. If you want your Saturday night to look like a frat party, you’re going to be bumming most weekends. But if you survive the four years with a smile, you’ll have learned a lot about how to make something out of nothing.

Not So Good.

There's not really a nightlife here. There's a few sketchy bars, but that's it.

I just transferred to Earlham this...

I just transferred to Earlham this semester and actually didn’t go to very many parties. This question also majorly depends on one’s idea of a good time. I guess I should say that, for me, the further from a frat-like experience, the better. For example, I went to one at La Casa Hispana, and people were actually dancing, and I can say that truly everyone seemed to be having a good time. It also depends on what your definition of party is—I went to a festival at the farm, which was awesome. There was bluegrass and dancing, and I thought it was fantastic. I’ve also been to some really fun smaller gatherings at some houses. Yet, I’ve also been to some parties where if you just plunked me down there I could have been at any college in the United States, and I can’t tell you how fast I wanted to get out of there. I think parties at Earlham really run the gamut, yet on average, they are less frat-like and better than at other colleges.

Each campus theme house usually throws a big party every year to go along with their theme (e.g., euro-trash at French House). Miller Farm also holds an annual Halloween party, with a band playing in the barn and a house and yard full of dancing, costumed people.

You can visit Charlie’s Coffee Shop (see Off-Campus Dining listings), keep an eye out for interesting campus speakers, concerts, festivals, and the like, have a spontaneous dance party in a cornfield, and admire the incredible stars, or get camping equipment from the Wilderness Department, and have a camping adventure.
