Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There’s a reason Midwestern cuisine hasn’t piqued much interest in any other region of the country, and this reason will become painfully clear once you step off campus for a bite. Most of the local restaurants seem to be competing for the titles of “Least Impressive Atmosphere,” “Most Likely to Make You Wish You Stayed Home,” and “The Greasy Plate Award.” Streamlined and Americanized Mexican and Chinese food is about as close as Richmond gets to international fare. Despite the poor pickings, if you do decide to brave Richmond’s dining options, you’ll probably want a car. There are some local spots you’re sure to visit at some point in your Earlham career: El Rodeo for Mexican food and margaritas, the Olde Richmond Inn for a night with the folks, and 5th Street Coffee & Bagels or Sunshine Café for breakfast and coffee. Homecoming is held at Charlie’s, which offers the closest approximation of “hip” in Richmond and offers a good selection of interesting beverages and light fare, as well as performances from local musicians and free wireless Internet. All in all, local spots are iffy at best, and Earlham is too small to persuade many owners into having late-night specials or student discounts. Ultimately, you’re won’t win too many hearts with a date at a local restaurant. You’re probably better off going to Kroger’s or Meyer’s (better options than the nearby LoBill’s) and courting a crush with a homemade meal.

Not the Worst

The options off campus include mainly (good) Mexican or Italian food. There are many chains (Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Arby's, O' Charley's), but also some really great local options (Little Sheba's, Gislain's, La Mex, Gallo's). They just put in a new Italian restaurant within easy walking distance of campus, next to MARSH.

Not Great, but Not a Deal-Breaker

Off-campus dining can be spotty, but most people find nice places to eat within a biking-distance. Since the kitchens in Earlham dorms are so nice, most people go to the local co-op, farmer's market, or grocery store and get cool ingredients to cook for themselves.
