Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

ECU is a very wired campus. Students can do many things online right from their dorm rooms, such as check grades, drop or add classes, read the East Carolinian, search for student organizations, and participate in online discussion forums at Banner or at www.partyeastcarolina.com (managed off campus). Ideally, however, the extensive computer network on campus would actually help students get out of their rooms by connecting them to other students who have similar interests but who they might not have met yet in classes or organizations. Computers are not required for all incoming students at ECU, and with some labs open late or 24 hours, computers are not really necessary, but they are worth it for the convenience of being able to work or socialize online at any time of the day or night. The IT Help Desk is a 24-hour hotline that provides remote troubleshooting assistance for computer difficulties for students on and off campus. On-campus students can also make appointments for “room service” to help set up their computer and register it on the network. Each student is provided with an e-mail account that has spam filtering capability and network space for files (Pirate Drive) and for hosting personal Web sites. Also, if students do not want to purchase design software, several computer labs have it installed there.

Internet and Computers

The computer labs are nice, I never really see too many people utilizing them. There is definitely a need for a personal computer and printer, the printing service is confusing. Network speed is fine, sometimes glitchy as expected.

Paper Limit

The computer labs are terrible. You can only print off a certain number of pages and most of the time the labs are full of people. The wireless requires you to insert your credintials everytime you get on the internet.

Computer Labs and Costly Printing

There are some computer labs around campus where you can print for free, but they are kind of hidden. I don't really know where they are. Library you have to pay to print.
