Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The word “diversity” has been significant on campus for the past few years, especially in student leadership training and in the administration. On the student level, however, diversity is manifested in many forms at ECU, including state, race and ethnicity, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, age, and economic background. Minority student organizations do not generally restrict membership to students who are of a particular ethnicity. Usually, the groups are open to anyone who appreciates the culture and who is interested in educating others. Some students, however, seem to feel that the push for diversity has resulted in some degree of disenfranchisement for
majority groups. Inter-racial and inter-religious couples are not uncommon here, which tends to either dismay or delight parents. New students can expect spontaneous step demonstrations on Wright Plaza during pledge season. New students will also see others wearing headscarves or perhaps yarmulkas, and some wearing shirts with religious sayings on them or crosses around their necks. A note about North vs. South and big city vs. small town interaction: at ECU, we hold the door for people and say hello to people even if we do not know them.

Facts

Gay Pride

B-GLAD (Bisexuals, Gays, Lesbians, and Allies for Diversity) is a campus organization that strives to raise awareness and promote tolerance of diverse sexual orientations and tendencies on campus and in the community. Membership is open to all students, staff, and faculty, regardless of their sexual preferences.

Political Activity

ECU has several active political groups, including Americans for Informed Democracy (AID), College Democrats, College Republicans, Ducks Unlimited, Model United Nations, North Carolina Student Legislature, as well as a Student Government Association.

Economic Status

The tuition for four years of undergrad studies at ECU, especially for in-state students, is cheaper than one year at some private schools in North Carolina and many out-of-state public colleges and universities, which means that ECU is economically accessible to students from a greater range of economic backgrounds. Students from middle- and upper-middle-class backgrounds seem to outnumber students from extremely wealthy or extremely low-income families.

Most Common Religions

Christianity is among the most common religions on campus, though Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism all have representative student organizations. There is also the Unitarian Universalist Campus Ministry, which operates on campus.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Academic and social groups and Greek organizations that consist primarily of minorities are visible and active on campus. Some of the major events sponsored by minority groups are the step shows, the Minority Ball, and the Annual Pow-Wow. ECU’s minority and intercultural clubs include the Intercultural Student Senate, the Minority Association of Pre-Health Students, NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), the Arab Student Union, the Asian Student Association, the Black Student Union, the East Carolina Native American Organization, the Indian Pirates Association, the International Student Association, the Italian Club, Japan League, the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality, the Student Association of Latino-Spanish Affairs, and Thespians for Diversity.
