Facilities are forever being upgraded, so new students may have to detour around construction to get to class. Flanagan, one of ECU’s most attractive buildings, has been remodeled since the new science and technology building opened. The med school is also enlarging its space. ECU has an abundance of athletics facilities, even though the teams are not the best. The Clark-LeClair Baseball Stadium and the Murphy Center are new. An amusing detail: the custom carpet in the club level of the football stadium is purple with gold pirate hats. That must have been pricey. Most of ECU’s facilities, especially athletics ones, are named for donors. Some students wonder if the University will start naming bathrooms, too.
The Rec Center is very popular among students, as are bowling and billiards in the basement of Mendenhall. In addition, Wright Auditorium, Hendrix Theater, McGinnis Theater, and Fletcher Recital Hall provide venues for events, movies, plays, and concerts. Students and the administration also must not forget that greenness is perhaps ECU’s greatest attribute, since so many students comment on it immediately when they visit campus for the first time, and the weather is conducive to outdoor activities. There are lovely green areas on campus near the science and technology building, along Fifth Street, between Mendenhall and the library, near Slay, the lower half of College Hill, and the Mall.
