Because Greenville is in the South, ECU students are naturally sociable. It is customary to speak to, or at least smile at, people passing by on the sidewalk, even if you don't know them. Most students are aware of other students who may be passing through doors behind them and won't let the door slam in their face. Casually holding the door for someone behind you, whether you've ever seen them before or not, is common courtesy and could even get you a date.

There are a lot of random hookups, especially at parties and as a result of drunken encounters at clubs. Some off-campus couples move in with each other temporarily before breaking up or getting married. There are also students who meet someone in their first semester at ECU and end up marrying them before, or soon after, graduation. There are many engagements between students, particularly between juniors and seniors.

Going to different events on campus allows you to meet a large variety of people, such as a philanthropy event for a sorority, like a pasta dinner.

The dress at ECU ranges from hippie-casual to business to preppy to next-to-nothing. Anything goes here. There is no single style that students as a whole feel pressured to assume. Students mostly wear jeans and t-shirts to class.
