Fun Local Trivia
  1. Greenville is often referred to as the Emerald City, which may be appropriate since some people dream of coming here, and depending on what is wished for, sometimes Greenville is a place for wish fulfillment, just like the Emerald City in The Wizard of Oz.
  2. Fountain Boats (world-famous racing boats) and Grady White Boats (widely coveted fishing boats) are manufactured here.
  3. ESPN commentators often refer to Greenville as "Pro Town USA" for BMX bikers. It is home to some of the best BMX riders in the world, and Extreme Park in Jaycee Park is a mecca for aspiring pro bikers and skaters.
  4. Greenville is the "Hammock-Making Capital of the World" because of the Hatteras Hammocks manufacturer and because of the Hammock Company, which has recently opened in Winterville, a town adjacent to Greenville.
  5. George Washington spent the night in Greenville on April 17, 1791, during his Southern tour after becoming president, and several families later claimed he had eaten at their homes.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Greenville’s population is about 70,000, making it the largest town east of Raleigh. The Greenville area is also home to Pitt Community College, and most Greenvillians are connected to ECU, PCC, or the regional medical center. Some locals affectionately refer to Greenville as a “black hole” because many people who leave tend to eventually return, and many who come from other places tend to stay. Because of political bias and a recent economic downturn after governmental restrictions on tobacco farming, eastern NC is sometimes ignored, but a large tourism industry is developing in the stead of our fading rural economy. Greenville is within a day’s drive of numerous eastern NC locales, including the Outer Banks (OBX) and Washington, less than 25 miles east, which has the NC Estuarium and places for fishing and boating around the Inner Banks (IBX). The Tar River has canoe trails which are suitable for kayaking, and the Rec Center offers canoes, kayaks, and other outdoor gear rentals. There are also dances here almost every weekend, such as contra, salsa, ballroom, and occasionally swing and disco. Late May through July, the Sunday in the Park series provides free concerts featuring local artists. Fall and spring are great times for students to leave town for a day and visit local festivals. Greenville partners with ECU to host PirateFest, an arts, athletics, and international festival in the spring, as well.

Ecuville

Greenville would be just another small town in Eastern Carolina without ECU, and a lot smaller, too. There's lots of purple and gold here and nothing to do. There are some interesting shops and restaurants within walking distance of campus, but there's really not much to do. Nothing very cultural or diverse here compared to other college towns in NC like Raleigh (NC State) and Chapel Hill (UNC). The outdoor recreation isn't too terrible, though.

Ghetto Vegas

the town is a decent size but there's definitely a lot to do at night. The bars and clubs downtown are always busy especially thursday through Saturday. It's definitely worth checking out.
