College Prowler Take
Off-campus housing is suited for students who are not used to sharing or want more privacy than what the dorms offer. Greenville is fast growing, sometimes sickeningly so, which means there is plenty of housing near and away from campus. There are attractive older areas that actually have trees, but there is also an epidemic of monotonously hideous complexes that lack landscaping. Some students try to live within walking distance of campus in student-filled areas, like 10th Street and the area between Fifth Street and the Tar River. Others prefer to live farther away from campus, in places off of Arlington Boulevard or near the hospital, perhaps to be closer to their workplace or just to separate their school and home lives. ECU’s extensive bus routes make living off campus convenient, as long as the area is on a route.
Living off campus can be cheaper than living and eating on campus, but students should be aware that the deals that landlords and companies sometimes offer to students who are inexperienced in apartment hunting are not really deals. In addition, living off campus can be an isolating and sometimes disorienting affair for new students. Thus, students who want to focus on getting acclimated to classes, organizations, being away from home, and other aspects of college life should seriously consider living on campus for at least a semester or a year when they first arrive at ECU.

The key to off-campus housing is...
The key to off-campus housing is finding package deals. Make sure there is a lease that includes water and sewage, and if they will throw in free Internet or cable, it’s a good deal. Also, students searching for housing should be sure to ask questions about any alterations they want to make to the apartment because the landlords, or the leasing contracts, can be very tricky in regards to what renters can and cannot do, and they will find a way to stick people with charges at the end of the lease. |

I’m so excited to be able to get away from campus housing. There are not any roaches in my apartment. I don’t have a weird roommate who does all kinds of strange things and doesn’t like anything I like, who stays up for no reason and makes random noise when I’m trying to study or sleep. I finally feel like a grown and serious college student now that I’m off campus. |

Living in an apartment obviously has many advantages, such as personal spaces and things like an oven, but on-campus parking for commuters is usually pretty stressful. |

Be careful when choosing a place to live off campus. It absolutely must have air conditioning, especially in the summer, if you are going to survive. It is not too hot in the spring, but it is sometimes hot enough for air conditioning in October. |

I like living off campus because I...
I like living off campus because I have been able to meet so many new people. There is always a party in one of the apartments or out by the pool. If I don’t want to party, I just close my bedroom door and have a private place to study or to entertain. |
