Campus Dining at East Carolina University

Awful Awful Awful

I absolutely loathe the campus dining. We have quite a few restaurants on campus such as Chikfila and Chili's but as for the cafeteria's they are absolutely awful. They have only a few choices, and a salad bar. I am pretty positive everything, including the lettuce, has been bathed in butter. Also, God forbid them give you a decent portion of vegetables. They give you about three pieces of broccoli and that's all you get. Healthy? Noooooooo. With their consistent making of pizza, some sort of fried food, and stir fry bar there is nothing I am going to miss when I get into my apartment this fall.

Library, Student Rec Center, and Mendenhall Student Center

To start, Joyner Library is huge. There's tons of computers, private study rooms that you can reserve (you'll want to reserve one around finals/midterms if you're someone that needs some private, distraction-free space to study), and obviously tons of books. The Pirate Tutoring Center is also located in the library. They're open 6:30-9:30 Monday-Thursday, and there's also some daytime hours depending on the subject as well. The library is open until 2AM on weekdays and I believe midnight on the weekends. It's open 24 hours during finals.

The student rec center is the main gym at ECU. There's maybe 8 basketball courts, volleyball/badminton nets, a rock climbing wall, a track, tons of exercising equipment (treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, etc.). There's also a weight room. The rec is open until 10 or 11:00 at night most days and opens fairly early as well. The rec center is close to West End (a neighborhood at ECU). If you live on College Hill (a different neighborhood) it's a good 15 or 16 minute walk to get to the rec, however there's another small gym that's located on the hill if you don't want to go that far. There's also a shuttle that comes every 10-15 minutes that takes you right to the gym! The gym is free for all ECU students, and you can bring a guest for 5 dollars for the day.

Mendenhall Student Center has a lot of rooms where clubs meet. There's also a bowling alley downstairs (it's extremely cheap- only 25 cents per game and I think 75 cents to rent shoes!!) as well as pool tables and other things in the billiards room. Mendenhall also has a movie theater room where they show a different movie every couple weeks or so. It's usually movies that just recently left theaters, and they show it multiple times (usually on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at different times).

Internship Opportunities

All majors, that I know have, require an internship complete before graduation. I think this is a great way to experience the career field a student wants to pursue, along with giving the students an idea that graduation is fast approaching. ECU career center gives a helping hand to those that are looking for internships and/or job opportunities after graduation. They are there to help with the writing of respectable resume, improving interviewing skills, as well as managing the job search. The career center is great help but so are the professors from your major. If you take the time to ask, you'll be properly directed towards a successful career.

School & Community Environment

Professors like to require volunteer service hours apart of the semester's syllabus and it definitely helps students get more involved with the town's volunteer programs. ECU certainly promotes student involvement in the community to help spread awareness of the town's economic status and the benefits lending a hand to those in need.

Off-Campus Dining Options in Greenville

There is a good variety of food options outside our school. They are very close by campus so you know where everything is. Greenville has all the fast food restaurants known and also nice ones like Olive Garden and Longhorn's Steak House and they all have good reasonable prices.

Best Place on Earth

East Carolina has to be one of the best social and overall great campuses alive. Coming in as a freshman, you feel so accepted and no one judges you for the choices you make. There is NEVER a dull moment on campus because there is always something crazy, funny, or helpful going on. If I had to choose schools all over again, I would definitely pick ECU again!

It's Your Choice

The drug scene at ECU all depends on who you hang out with. Drugs are indeed a popular thing, but it's never out in the open. Drinking is more popular here, but luckily for both substances, peer pressure is very small. It's ultimately your choice if you want to do it or not.

Off-Campus Housing

The off campus housing selection is great. There are many apartment complexes that benefit student needs. Most of the apartments have their own gym, internet cafes, basketball courts, pools, and tanning. The apartments are usually gated and very safe. All of the apartments have buses that take you to campus and back from classes.

General Campus Aesthetics

The overall campus at East Carolina is beautiful. The 2011 fall semester brought Hurricane Irene and her wrath upon the campus causing quite a bit of damage. However, there have been people working hard since then to restore the campus to it's original beauty. Our campus has a modern yet classic feel to it. There's a large grassy area (the mall) in the center of campus. It's beautiful. The grass is very green and luscious. There are many art sculptures scattered about the campus which add to it's aesthetics. The only thing you have to worry about is the squirrels.

Exercise Physiology

I am currently enrolled at East Carolina University. I love it there. I am an exercise physiology major and all my teachers have been great so far. They really understand that students have lives outside of school. You have to take a lot of exercise classes, but it's not so bad if you're athletic.
