Transportation

Buses are the way to go, unless you bring your bike. The bus route is extremely convenient and on time, all include air conditioning and recently updated. The campus is fun to bike around. Other activities off campus require a car for the most part.

The computer labs are nice, I never really see too many people utilizing them. There is definitely a need for a personal computer and printer, the printing service is confusing. Network speed is fine, sometimes glitchy as expected.

East Carolina's Facilities

East Carolina's facilities are updated and well kept. The recreation center is nice as everything else on campus, not state of the art, but gets the job done.

Off-Campus Housing

The off campus housing selection is great. There are many apartment complexes that benefit student needs. Most of the apartments have their own gym, internet cafes, basketball courts, pools, and tanning. The apartments are usually gated and very safe. All of the apartments have buses that take you to campus and back from classes.

Everyone Carries an Umbrella

Anyone who goes to East Carolina University (ECU) will tell you that is also stands for Everyone Carries an Umbrella. With seemingly no warning, short burts of rain will downpour on unsuspecting students just getting out of class and just as soon as you get back to your dorn, the rain suddenly stops.

Overall Experience Here at East Carolina University

My overall experience has been great! ECU may be known as a party school, but it's only what you make of it. If you devote your time to studying hard, then your college will be just that! If you devote your time to partying and all of that good stuff, your experience will be just that! I experienced both and I'm proud to say that I have LOVED my experience here and I AM going to miss it, but there's a time for fun and games and there's a time to step up to the plate and live this thing they call life.

Some of the Best in NC.

Considering you are in Greenville NC, and no one East of Raleigh or outside of NC has ever heard of the place, the downtown scene is really great. Especially Halloween! There are the famous drunk buses that run on the weekends til 230 am that take you from dt to about every main apartment complex in the area. And even if you live in the furthest dorm, its still only a 10 minute walk to dt. There are plenty of bars and clubs (for both underage and 21+). Parties here are unlike anywhere else you'll go. Whether its a huge party at some apartment (like Sunchase or the Landing) or at a frat house, you'll always find something to do on the weekends. Remember, you can't spell parties without pirates!

A Spirtited Experience Not Worth Missing

The college experience of living on campus is not worth missing ever. You need to at least do it once during your college years. The dorms might be gross...the people might be obnoxious... but it's all a part of being a college student. My freshman dorm was really gross, the girls were crazy and out of control, the drama was... way too much sometimes, my RA was ridiculous, and I loved it. It just depends on the dorm you choose and how you look at the whole situation. It doesn't always work out for some...but you should definitely try it.

An Old, Old Wooden Ship

On the ECU campus, there is an abundance of personalities, ideals, motives, backgrounds, and though there is a club for just about everything under the sun, somehow they seem to be unified through their differences. Different organizations are tolerant of each other, and even supportive of each other. As a general observation, students seem to feel accepted by the campus because of their differences; one finds their home within a group and those they share common interests with. There are those who are not so tolerant of differential qualities, however, they seem to be the minority when scanning the campus. I am involved with the campus ministry Intervarsity, and though there is always room to improve, we strive to appreciate the diversity in our classmates, friends, and neighbors.

The "Party School" Reputation

I have been at ECU for two years now, and I have not once witnessed anyone use illegal drugs. Alcohol, on the other hand, is a different story. It's everywhere. Sometimes people will even sneak alcohol into football games or class if they're that desperate and irresponsible. A lot of people smoke weed but it's not as prevalent anymore, especially since smoking of any kind has been banned in the clubs downtown.

ECU (Everyone Carries Umbrellas)

This is a well known motto at our school. It is known by every student in attendence that you should carry an umbrella with you on every cloudy day there is because when it rains on campus there is flooding everywhere. Also ECU students should invest in a pair of Rain-boots to keep you dry from the rain.

Greenville, a Second Home

It has a beautiful campus! It seems like a great town, and there are many things to do. People seem friendly as well as active there! It may have a reputation for partying, but I do not view it as a party school. I view it as Greenville, a second home. A place for education. A beautiful place. And the college of my dreams!

March 1St Scholarship Application

Since I do not qualify for any grants but am living off campus, my debt is piling up quick. My grades are in great standing and I will be applying for a scholarship made available to ECU students with a GPA of at 3.25 on March 1st.

Apply Early and Get Merit Scholarships

Although I had excellent grades in high school, I did not decide to come to ECU until February of my senior year, making it too late to earn any merit scholarships (which I would have received). Even after maintaining a 4.0 GPA in my first semester, I have had difficulty in finding scholarship money. Most merit scholarships I have seen do not usually apply until second semester Sophomore year (45 credit hours).

Strict but Fair

As long as you are doing what you should be doing, this won't be a problem. Drinking underage in the dorms is pretty much offlimits, and drug use is not tolerated at all... thankfully. I'd rather not have to worry about my dorm mates getting drunk or stoned.

Diversity isn't all that great at ECU. There are people of all races and elasticities, but the majority of people are white. Still, at the same time the campus seems very open and accepting of everybody regardless of race or ethnicity.

ECU's Greek Life

There is a large variety of sororities and fraternities at ECU. There are always parties or other events going on in and out of Greek Life houses. Personally, I would not like to be involved in a sorority because I think I might not be able to manage both greek life and student life at the same time, but most students at ECU love it.

Professors

The professors at East Carolina University are extremely competent, dedicated, and hard-working. They try to use an evidence-based curriculum that is back not only by their degree, but by experimental results. However, the professors in the science department may be somewhat of an exception. Although they are dedicated and use an evidence-based course curriculum, they have trouble attempting to simplify their course material to the general, non-science, student.
