Traffic is always worse in Greenville when the students are here, but the only major transportation nuisance is the freight trains that block north-south and east-west tracks for long periods, always during morning, lunch, and evening rush hours instead of in the middle of the night. The city has a bus system, GREAT (Greenville Area Transit), which charges minimal fees. ECU's Student Transit Authority, however, is safe and caters to student needs, with routes all over Greenville and campus, and students have already paid for transit services in their fees. Student Transit's purple, yellow, and white buses go so many places that, with planning, on-campus students may not need a car, and off-campus students who live on the bus routes may not need to buy a parking permit. Knowing schedules is imperative. There is not just one bus that goes directly to campus, or one shuttle that goes everywhere. Getting on the wrong bus could result in a tour of town and being late for class. To avoid such an experience, students should read the schedules on
www.transit.ecu.edu. Students who do not know much about Greenville should consider riding several routes when they get here to orient themselves to campus and Greenville. To verify which bus is going where, students can read the marquee or ask the driver.
