Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Academics at Eckerd really boil down to the professors. A good teacher can make a required class exciting and can even draw you toward a major you never knew you loved, and luckily, Eckerd boasts excellent professors. They genuinely want to be here and are passionate about their interests/subject matter, as well as their students. Class sizes are small and intimate. There are usually around 20 to 24 students in the more popular classes, and most classes cap at around 22 students. Labs will have half that number, and everyone gets hands-on exposure every day. At Eckerd, you’ll never feel like a number or just another anonymous face.

Overall, the academic atmosphere at Eckerd can be as challenging as you make it. Students who want to work hard go for tougher majors, additional minors, and a slew of extracurricular activities, and those who just want to skate by do the bare minimum. And, both spectrums exist. The atmosphere at Eckerd is not overly competitive, but it can be hard to stay focused if you’re not self-motivated.

Amazing

The academics offered at Eckerd are exceptional. The colleges proximity to the ocean allows for some of the best hands on experience for anyone interested in any sort of marine related study. The professors are amazing, charming, nice and extremely knowledgable. I have friends who are marine science majors and havent once yet actually gone out into the field, the beach, estuaries ect. Within the first week of being in class, I was out in the bay collecting samples and learning about marine life hands on and not from a textbook or pictures like at many other schools. The marine science department is just a prime example of what else Eckerd has to offer with its many other programs. Grade A school!

Did You Know?
  • Eckerd operates on a 4-1-4 academic calendar, which features two traditional semesters and Winter Term. This is a three-week long period after winter break where students focus on one subject or project. They can take a unique class independent of their major, do an independent study, or go abroad, which is nice because it gives busy students the chance to study abroad for a short period rather than a whole semester, although they can certainly do both. Eckerd usually sponsors several Winter Term trips; past ones have included everywhere from Africa to New Mexico. Students must participate in three Winter Terms, whether on campus or off, as a requirement for graduation.
  • Western Heritage in a Global Context (WHGC) is the one class all freshmen are required to take. The idea is to combine all the general education requirements into one class, eliminating the need for separate requirements (composition, history, etc.). All freshmen are required to take two semesters of WHGC; however, students with AP or IB credit may only have to take one semester (yes, those classes actually do count for something, so take the exams if you can!).
