Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Athletics seem to be a large part of campus life only if you’re on one of the teams. The sports that draw the largest crowds by far are men’s soccer, basketball, and men’s rugby; women’s volleyball is also becoming more popular. A major plus to watching outdoor sporting events at Eckerd is, regardless of the season, you can lounge on the lawn, catch some sun, and socialize as the game is underway, which doesn’t happen everywhere. Eckerd carries its low-key vibe into the sports arena, but don’t let that fool you—the teams at Eckerd should not be taken lightly and do surprisingly well. The athletes are very motivated and dedicated to their sports, but overall, school spirit and home game crowds are relatively low. Recently, the College has attempted to encourage more interest from the student body by throwing pre-game pep rallies and offering “first fan” giveaways, usually a T-shirt or cup.

Intramural sports are vastly overlooked at Eckerd. On the club sports side, the good news is anyone can start and charter a club and will receive decent funds. But, unless they raise their own publicity, the clubs are usually ignored by the administration. Some of the more popular ones that have made their way or are beginning to be a force are kiteboarding, surfing, rugby, and ultimate Frisbee.

A Unique Variety of Sports

Although the school is not known for its great athletics, we do have a unique variety of sports. Some of the sports include rugby, sailing, ultimate frisbee, beach volleyball, and field hockey. Unfortunately, our sports as a whole do not perform well, there is little fan support or school spirit. Sports are more of a leisure activity at Eckerd.

Awesome to Be One, but Little Support

The athletes are great and have a lot of fun together. Most the teams are of average talent/success, a few are really good, and a few are really bad.
