Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Sure, the dorms are old, but the location is unbeatable. Most have a view of the bay, especially the upperclassman dorms, some of which even have balconies. All dorms are accessible to some key feature on campus, such as the library, cafeteria, or waterfront, and all of the residential buildings compose a sloppy semicircle, so no dorm is really far from anything. The traditional dorms are shared and small—they are dorms, after all—but have large windows, so they are tolerable for the first two years. Most traditional dorms are coed with guys on one floor and girls on another, and the bathrooms on each floor are communal, typically with four showers, three sinks, and three stalls. There is also a separate dish/dry room on each floor for washing dishes or hanging a bathing suit up to dry out. Each dorm has a lounge with a couch and TV. Additionally, four "houses" make up a complex, and each housing complex has a lounge with a dining area, game table, kitchen, TV, and bathroom. Upperclassmen live in suites with more privacy. The worst part about the dorms is that they date back to when the college was built, which was when asbestos in ceiling was no cause for nightmares. However, this may not be as big of a problem anymore because Eckerd had redone some of the dorm ceilings.

A nice feature of the dorms is the social interaction within each complex. The dorm holding the reputation for being the quietest, craziest, or having the most night owls changes year to year, but regardless of which dorm you’re in, there is usually a lot of interaction among the residents. Resident advisers (RAs) are there to facilitate concerns and fun and plan communal activities; generally, if you get along with them, they are great to have around.

Awesome Dorm Living

Dorm life at Eckerd college is excellent. All the dorms besides the sigma dorm are centrally located-close to everything on campus. Rooms are generally larger then most other dorms at other schools I've visited. Close to 90% of all students live on campus which is great for social life. There are traditional dorms great for freshman that encourage social life and "friend making." There are also two apartment style dorms that are great for upperclassmen. Also, the view from a select few of the dorms are amazing, overlooking the beautiful Tampa Bay. The price is a average for dorm living, but when else are you going to be living on the water, basically almost beachfront property, oh yeah there's a beach located on campus. Laundry machines located in all the dorms complexes and the cost to do laundry is honestly way cheaper than at many other school, a full load-wash and dry is only $1.25. Traditional dorms all have centrally located communial bathrooms, clean and convienent. The apartment style dorms all have private bathrooms attached to the rooms. The sigma dorm also has bathrooms attached to each room because it is a converted hotel, but sigma is located, almost isolated at the front of campus. Overall dorm living is awesome.

Dorms Are Fine

I really love the dorm that i live in right now, Zeta. It may look like the 70s, but it is pretty nice with a new lounge. The dorms change yearly, but each has its own personality. For example, Kappa plays a lot of dubstep and parties hard on weekends. The people are really friendly in every dorm though, so you can find a niche anywhere

Upperclass Dorms Are Amazing

There are several different classifications of dorm rooms at eckerd.

Traditional dorms, 2 people to a room, are ok. The rooms are big and each one has a huge window which is really nice. They aren't in the best shape, but the furniture in them is in ptty good shape, kind of depends on the room, but overall not bad. The one negative thing is the ceilings, they installed drop ceilings in all the rooms becua the ceilings have asbestos in them. So if the drop ceiling were to fall, you would be exposed to asbestos, which is midly concerning.

Upperclassmen dorms are to die for, if you get the right room. I had the most amazing waterfront view from my room as a junior. We always joke that it's the cheapest waterfront view you will have have. Untilnyou experience it, it's hard to understand. Those dorms house 8 people to a suite, but no kitchen. It's a cool place to live, most on campus pasrties are there. The condition of the rooms is ok, but maintenance is very good about repairs.

Housing process is pretty simple. It's a tad unfair, and most of it has to do with luck. So the lucky ones will get the best rooms. But class standing plays a significant role in the process as well. Most people (about 80%) live on campus. It's easier, and if you get a good room, you could have an amazing vi.
