Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is a ton of natural beauty around campus, and not just in the landscaping. Let’s face it, if you choose to go to a school on the beach, walking to class will often look like a Clearasil ad. Eckerd students are attractive, often come from money or exotic backgrounds, and most just want to have fun, enjoy the sun, and soak up the tropical atmosphere. What’s nice is that the Eckerd student body is made up of many different crowds, from the so-called “hippies” to athletes, biology buffs to the international crowd. And, at a school this small, everybody somehow gets along strangely well. In such an accepting place, many people experiment with their image and crowd and find new things they are really into, while others just seem to follow the fad. But, there’s a little something for everyone. Freshman year is fun, and if you stick around, you can connect with some awesome individuals and very unique people.

On the other side of things, even though everyone is incredibly accepting, such a small campus can start to fill a bit claustrophobic by late sophomore or junior year. The small size doesn’t bode well for a great dating scene, and competition can be pretty stiff with a high girl-to-guy ratio. However, some students find love and others lust; and, if you want to broaden your horizons, pretty much everyone chooses to go abroad at some point.

Laid Back

Everyone at Eckerd College is pretty laid back and casual. The majority of people get along with one another. There are lots of students that could be identified as "hippies"--often times you'll see them walking around barefoot.

Guys and Girls

Ladies, it is slim pickings. Do not come here expecting to find a dating scene because it does not exist. For someone used to dating, it was a huge shock, and it will probably be one of the strangest social scenes you have ever experienced. There are more girls then guys and some are pretty decent, but there is a high gay population. The only way you will ever find anyone is if you fit into the mold of a hippie and find another similar hippie to date you, if he isn't too busy smoking pot.

Facts

Social Scene

Students are definitely friendly and outgoing, and you will probably meet a good percentage, if not most, of the freshman class during Autumn Term (Eckerd’s three-week-long orientation for freshmen). You can interact with other students through classes or just by being on campus, since most students live on campus and generally dine/hang out on campus. Great places to meet people are the library, dorms, hammocks, Eckerd and St. Pete beaches, the waterfront, intramural sports, Kappa Courtyard, Palmetto events, and, of course, the ever so popular college night at the Sloppy Pelican.

Hookups or Relationships?

The small student body size and high girl-to-guy ratio can make dating a little hard, but you'll find both here.

Dress Code

In terms of clothes, pretty much anything goes, as long as it’s laid back. Girls do get dressed up at night to go out, but it really depends on the crowd. You’ll see everything from highly maintained to downright doesn’t care, but remember, this is the beach, so think summertime style and save the big city clothes for going out or going home. Even professors occasionally go sans shoes, and flip-flops are the most consistent accessory in anyone’s closet.
