Transportation

Quick Stats

Best Ways to Get Around Town
  • Yellow Bike
  • Your own bike (Yellow Bikes can be scarce)
  • Car (your own, your friend's, your neighbor's)
  • Eckerd campus shuttle
Best Ways to Get to the Airport Talk to your friends because you can usually find someone who is going to the airport around the same time. After doing this and checking the ride-share site Zipride (eckerd.zipride.com/ride share), the next best option is SuperShuttle, which is easy to reserve and usually costs about $25. The only drawback is you’re usually not the only one on the pick-up list, so you may have to leave a bit earlier than desired and travel around a bit more than the usually quick 25-minute ride to the airport.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The transportation at Eckerd is mediocre. Technically, you don’t need a car because the campus is pretty self-contained, and there are groceries and a pharmacy within walking distance, but many students opt to bring one so they can easily take advantage of the great activities that abound in St. Petersburg. Unfortunately, the city itself does not have efficient or convenient public transportation. The public bus does stop on campus, but the service leaves much to be desired. Eckerd provides some shuttles to the mall, Saturday Market downtown, and special events, but they're not very popular. However, most upperclassmen take advantage of the buses that go from campus to downtown on First Friday, a monthly St. Pete nightlife event. There is also a shuttle service on College Night to the heavily frequented Sloppy Pelican.

On a different note, Eckerd is semi-famous for its Yellow Bike Program. The idea is to have yellow bikes around campus that are accessible to anyone, unlocked and ready to go. So, if you’re running late to class or want to get out to Kappa field, you can just go outside and hop on a yellow bike. Unfortunately, though, the program is having trouble despite its best efforts, and the number of bikes is dwindling. The students need to take better care of the bikes and keep them from disappearing off campus if the program is going to continue.

Take a Taxi

If you don't own a car, take a Taxi. There are fairly cheap Taxis that go anywhere in St. Petersburg. There is also a constantly-running bus, though I don't know the price or its route.

Keep in mind, also, that there are a lot of friendly students on campus with a car. If you need a ride, ask around.

Non-Existant

No one takes public transportation., too complicated and unreliable. You have to have a car to go anywhere. But the car policy on campus and cost is so reasonable. Under $100 to register your car for the entire year, and that is the only fee you will pay for car related expenses on campus. Unless you get a parking ticket.
