Even with the school's small size, there is a great deal of variety in the field of athletics at Elmira College. Many students participate in the athletic program, whether it be varsity, junior varsity, or intramural sports. The Elmira College men's and women's hockey teams are nationally ranked, and a great deal of pride comes from the success of these teams. Hockey games take place at the Murray Athletic Center, which is located off campus, but the College usually provides shuttle transportation so students can cheer on their friends and classmates. In terms of intramural sports, for a lot of students, it's their favorite part of the EC athletics program. Softball during Term III is one of the most well-loved student traditions. Team rosters are easily available at the Campus Center Information Desk, and nothing beats lounging out on Carnegie lawn, cheering on the teams. Competition during intramural season is not taken lightly; there is a very strong sense of pride when it comes to the volleyball, basketball, or softball championships.
Other sports that draw a crowd are men's and women's basketball, lacrosse, and men's volleyball teams. In order to bring students out for the season, the athletics department hosts "Hoops Hysteria" in the fall to showcase the men's and women's basketball teams, as well as the EC cheerleading team and Danceline, the school's dance team. Every year before heading to Nationals, the cheerleading team performs its routine for the school, which brings out big numbers. Often, there are raffles, prizes, and mini-games that students can participate in during athletic events, which keep the crowd involved during halftime.
