College Prowler Take

Intramural and club sports are very big on campus, probably bigger than many varsity sports. Elon offers 17 varsity sports and 21 intramural and club sports. Being an NCAA Division I School in the Southern Conference has helped Elon’s reputation grow, especially in men’s varsity baseball and football.

A good percentage of students play either varsity, intramural, or club sports at some point in their college careers. Popular varsity sports are baseball, football, cross-country, and women’s volleyball.

I wish varsity sports were a bigger deal at Elon, although our teams are definitely improving, which is increasing support. All of the fraternities and sororities have big tailgates before the home football games, which are a ton of fun to go to! Intramurals are a lot of fun and a great way to get involved and meet people; many students participate in them. Inter-sorority and inter-fraternity leagues are also fun!

Varsity sports are getting better,...

Varsity sports are getting better, but a lot of students don't really watch them on a regular basis. Intramurals are just to get out and play. People aren't necessarily good at the sports the play in IMs. Club sports is a nice balance between the two and isn't too time consuming.

Elon offers lots of sports for students to be involved with. We are continuously working on drawing a bigger student population at our varsity games and to have more school spirit. If you’re not on a varsity team, there are lots of opportunities to be involved in intramural sports. For those of us who played sports throughout our lives and are not going to play varsity sports, intramural sports are fabulous because they allow you to keep playing.

Our football program should pick up since we’re under a new coach now. Basketball is amazing. The games are really interactive—lots of spirit. IM sports are huge, easy to participate in.

There’s a lot of spirit in the building, and you can feel it as soon as you walk in; Elon takes a lot of pride in how it presents itself.
  • East Gym - Easy Gym is located next to the tennis courts and is often used for various sports, such as cheerleading, dance team, and basketball. It also serves as a place for athletes to practice in case of rain.
  • Jordan Gym - Jordan Gym was specifically built as a place for people to play basketball with friends, without worrying about being kicked out for practices. The facilities are in good condition, and Jordan’s sole purpose is for students to be able to unwind.
