College Prowler Take

When I first walked into my brother’s dorm at Notre Dame University, I thought I would die in college. It was about the third of the size of my room at home, and two people had to live in it! But when I saw the rooms at Elon University, my fears quickly vanished. Although no dorm could ever really have all the space most students crave, the rooms at Elon are big enough to fit most, if not all, of your needs. The Colonnades offer brand-new state-of-the-art single rooms or suite-style complexes with a quieter work environment. Danieley Center is a community in itself and offers a chance for students to live with up to eight people. Carolina and West are some of girls’ favorites, and the boys love the Smith dorm. During the holidays, residence life holds a variety of events and competition for the “areas”; often giving out some pretty neat prizes.

On the whole, Elon has some pretty nice dorms. You’ll find that laundry facilities are almost always busy, but this is the case almost anywhere. One concern for some is that none of the dorms have elevators. This can make moving in and out a more difficult task and will ensure that you’ll have to lug a suitcase up and down the stairs every time you’re going home for the weekend. But, there are handicap-accessible rooms on the first floors of many dorms, and none of the buildings are taller than three stories. These drawbacks are relatively minor compared to the beautiful housing facilities Elon provides for its student body. Elon students can rest assured in their extra-long twin beds that they’re getting one of the best deals around when it comes to campus housing.

The dorms have fairly large rooms! They include Internet, cable, phone and other amenities. They’re all nice, and I haven’t had problems anywhere.

Dorms are good. West, Virginia, Carolina, Smith, and Sloan are the coolest on-campus dorms and they have pretty decent room sizes. Hook, Barney, Brannock, and the others are a little rowdy and always have people in and out. Danieley is good, but it is pretty far off campus especially for freshmen. Jordan Center is ghetto.

The dorms are nice; there are some older ones and some newer ones. There are your typical hall dorms with hall bathrooms that are all one sex (Carolina and Smith). Then there are hall dorms with bathrooms between two of the rooms where the ‘suites’ (meaning two rooms and a bathroom) are one sex but the hall is Coed (Virginia and Moffitt). There are also suites that have five rooms, and nine people with two bathrooms’, these have a common living area (Chandler or Maynard).

The dorms are nice. There aren’t too many bad places to live. I like living in Chandler, but I know people in other dorms who like where they live. If you want to be really close to the academic buildings, do not live in Chandler, Colclough, Maynard, Moffitt or Staley. However, if you would rather be closer to the gym, library, student center and arts building, those dorms are great. Danieley is a nice place to live because the residences are set up like apartments, but they are really far from the rest of campus.

Chandler is nice I think. I don’t like the older dorms. Danieley is far and the rooms are small, but it’s new. It all depends on what you want. The atmosphere is different in the different areas.

Did You Know?

Residence Life often holds many events for students living on campus and in dorms, such as ice cream socials and dances.

Sometimes there are campus-wide competitions between different area dorms, like North Area against West Area. They promote pride and are lots of fun to participate in.

Some off-campus apartment options are available to upperclassmen who wish to move off campus but remain in
University-affiliated housing (listed above).
