College Prowler Take

Elon has what we call “deferred rush,” meaning that you cannot rush a Greek organization until at least the second semester of freshman year. You must also have a minimum GPA of 2.75 for women or a 2.5 for men before rushing. Elon is comprised of 21 Greek organizations, in addition to a variety of Greek honor societies, such as Phi Kappa Phi and Omicron Delta Kappa. About 35 percent of Elon students are Greek. Most sophomores live in the Greek housing, which includes a house manager who acts as an RA for the house. Elon prohibits hazing and has severe repercussions for organizations that don’t comply with the standards set by Greek life. You don’t have to be Greek to go to the parties; you just have to be on the guest list for on-campus Greek house parties. All on-campus parties are BYOB, and you must be over 21 to bring alcohol.

A lot of Greeks participate in campus-wide activities, such as Homecoming and intramural sports. They have a ton of spirit; most Greeks are proud of their fraternity/sorority and will speak very highly of Greek life. Even though only about a third of the campus is Greek, they are very dominant, both in everyday life and in leadership positions throughout campus. There is never a day that goes by that you won’t see someone wearing a pin, t-shirt, hat, or bag with his or her letters on it.

Greek life does not dominate the social scene in my opinion, because there are so many off-campus parties you are able to attend rather than the original frat party scene.

Greek life plays a very large role in campus life. Many people are involved in some way. There are parties nearly every weekend.

Did You Know?

Elon has what is called “deferred rush,” meaning all potential Greeks must have completed at least 12 Elon credit hours and have either a 2.35 minimum cumulative GPA (for women) or 2.3 (for men).

Greeks are well-known for their service to the community. Some of the projects Greeks have participated in are fundraising for breast cancer patients, Alzheimer’s patients, victims of domestic violence, and the Children’s Miracle Network. They also donate their time to Adopt-A-Highway projects, a Senior Prom at a local elderly home, and Ronald McDonald House.

The average Greek GPA is higher than the average non-Greek GPA.
