Quick Stats

School Slang
  • The Boobs: Lawn outside Moseley that consists of two mini-hills.
  • Club Belk: Another name for Belk Library. Procrastinators like to pull all-nighters here, and sometimes their friends will come visit between parties.
  • College Coffee: This is when faculty, staff, and students all come together in front of Alamance building on Tuesday mornings from 9:50–10:20 a.m. Sometimes student organizations have booths set up and use it as a time to promote their club or idea.
  • Drop/Add: Students may drop or add a course using Elon’s OnTrack on designated days. Don’t forget—if you’re planning on adding a class that is advanced, double check to see if you need a form signed by the department chair to be turned into the Registrar.
  • Elon 101: A class strongly encouraged (but not required) for freshmen to take, which goes over the ins and outs of Elon University, the town of Elon, and the city of Burlington. Social and academic topics are also explored, such as what to do when someone has a drinking problem, or the rules of the honor code and what punishments result from breaking it.
  • Elon Files: A book/organizer given to every student at check in on move-in day. It has the schedule of events for orientation, the hours of operation for most facilities on campus, tips on how to manage your money, a calendar of the school year, and a daily planner.
  • Elon OnTrack: The Web site for students, faculty, and staff to access their class schedules, grades, degree audit, class registration, and exam or academic schedules and calendars. This is one of the most important sites you’ll use, as a student.
  • GDI: God Damn Independent (non-affiliates)
  • Hard-on: Harden Cafeteria
  • HBB: Hook, Brannock, and Barney halls
  • KBC: Koury Business Center
  • Meal Dollars: With your meal plan, you’re allotted a certain amount in an account separate from Phoenix Cash. These meal dollars can only be used on food items, such as paying for a meal at Cantina Roble, Varsity, or any other on-campus restaurant.
  • Midnight Meals: Thursday nights, starting at around 11 p.m., the Student Union Board has “Midnight Meals” where they provide food, drinks, and entertainment. Best thing about it is you don’t need to use your meal plan for it!
  • The 'Nades: Colonnades Dining Hall
  • OL (Orientation Leader): An upperclassmen who will help you move in and be your guide throughout all the orientation activities to help you get settled into Elon.
  • Phoenie: Phoenix Card, your Elon ID card, your meal plan card, and can be linked to a Wachovia bank.
  • Phoenix Card: This is your Elon ID card, your meal plan card, and can be linked to a Wachovia bank.
  • Phoenix Cash: Instead of always carrying cash around, you can deposit money in your Phoenix account and use it anywhere on campus to pay for just about anything. If you’re hungry but already used your meal plan for that meal period, you can pay for food with your Phoenix Cash. Local restaurants accept it as well. Deposits can be made right on campus.
  • SLC: Service Learning Community. About 40 freshmen that live together in 3rd floor of Chandler Residence Hall. They participate as a community in service activities and reflections.
  • Winter Term: A three-week term in the month of January where students can take a class and get credit. This is especially good for students who want to get ahead in their studies. A variety of classes are offered for a variety of majors and requirements.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • During breaks, it's common to find students that are going to the same place or area as you. Rather than spending extra money on a plane ticket or driving yourself, check E-net under "Rides."
  • Go to the Organization Fair! There you will learn everything you ever wanted to know (and probably more) about all the clubs and organizations on campus.
  • Safe Rides will pick you up from a party and bring you back to your dorm without any public embarrassment. If you choose to drink, stay safe and don’t drive—that’s why Safe Rides is here.
  • The Writing Center is there to help you perfect any and all your papers, so you can get the best grade possible. The Center is located in the 1st floor of Belk Library in the back right corner. Their hours are Monday–Thursday 10 a.m.–10 p.m., Friday 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and Sunday 6 p.m.–10 p.m.
  • Try to buy your books early on Amazon.com, Half.com, or E-net postings from other students.
Tips to Succeed
  • E-mail or visit your professors during office hours the first week or two of classes. First impressions are vital, and if you take the time to get to know your professor, they will give you more opportunities to succeed. You may even find a perfect adviser or mentor in the process.
  • Free yourself from distractions. The library is a good place to get away from instant messenger and loud suite/hall-mates!
  • Get organized! Use notebooks, write things down, and have a daily planner.
  • Go to all of your classes——professors will notice when you're not in class and often deduct points from your participation grade if it happens often.
  • If you need help with study skills, find a study partner, talk to your advisor, or visit your professor during office hours.
  • Participate in all your classes. You want to stand out to your professors. Ask questions——don’t be ashamed if you don’t know something!
  • Read all the materials you’re assigned and take notes.
  • Read the syllabus carefully. Some professors spend a whole class day going over it, while others expect students to read the material outside of class and know the policies and procedures. Professors will include attendance policies, grading scales, and daily schedules of discussions and homework, so you're expected to know what's going on at all times!
  • Sleep! (Not in class.)
  • Take study breaks. Your brain needs a rest. Take a walk around Lake Mary Nell, take an aerobics class, or hit the gym.
  • Use the Writing Center and tutoring services available to all students.

Study Abroad

Study abroad program is unreal. Almost all of my friends who are upperclassmen have been abroad and have had amazing experiences that have really enriches their learning.

Also, the Foreign Language Department offers students the opportunity to get a free plane ticket (round trip) to any Spanish-speaking country if students log 140 hours in a place called "El Centro."

Not for Me

Just as it advertises, Elon is an amazing school where engaged learning is not only stressed, but required through the Elon Experiences. Although the campus is a bit of a mess due to construction, it is campus nonetheless one of the most amazing in the world, possessing both beauty and state-of-the-art facilities. However, many of the academic programs are small, as Elon has yet to come into its own, which diminishes the amount of courses and opportunities available for some majors. To say the least, Elon is also a huge party school, and from what I have seen, people have no problem finding a party. While Elon states that there are other opportunities available for the non-drinking student (like myself), these opportunities are very few and for the most part unappealing, leaving me bored and wanting to go home most weekends. Most of the clubs and organizations on campus also only meet once a month, and some of the ones I have encountered have been so disorganized that they have yet to begin, although halfway through the semester. Personally, I am choosing to leave Elon, but it could be the school for you!

Urban Legends
  • It's said that West Dorm is haunted after the fire of 1923 that wiped out all of the facilities on campus except West.
  • Jumping into Lake Mary Nell is a death wish—the diseases and bacteria that are probably in there are disgusting!
