Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Elon is in the middle of many other universities, including UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Greensboro, Duke, NC State, and Wake Forest. The town of Elon is very small, around 5,000–10,000 inhabitants (including university students and surrounding rural areas). The city of Burlington, which is about five minutes away, has a population of 47,592 inhabitants. Although that is a considerable population, many students complain about Burlington being too boring, though some like the quiet atmosphere. If you’re looking for a city with buildings taller than three stories, buses, metros, and people always busy going somewhere, Burlington is not the best area.

Burlington recently added Alamance Crossing, a shopping center with 41 stores and 11 restaurants. Other than that, there is a large variety of fast food restaurants and some “gems” that you have to search for. The city of Greensboro has many clubs and malls, the most popular of which is the Four Seasons mall. Raleigh has Southpoint, which is a more upscale mall with many popular stores. Most of the local entertainment comes from Elon’s campus or trips out of town.

Elon Is the Town

Elon is basically the town of Elon. It seems as if the only reason the town exists is for the university at times. Even the cop cars are maroon and gold, our school colors. The restaurants for the most part take "phoenix cash", there are tons of apartments and houses off campus where students live, and theres everything you need in town. Burlington is really close though and it definitely has a lot to offer. If your a freshman like me, you can take the bio bus to a mini mall with target, old navy, and a plethora of other useful places, and you can also go to Alamance crossing, which is more like an outdoor mall with select stores like sephora and american eagle that college students would probably like more. There isnt a clubbing or concert scene AT ALL, NO CITY LIFE- so if you are into that beware. But the town of Elon's small charm just adds to the feeling of community.

Need a Car

Nearby Burlington has some stuff going on, as do Raleigh, Greensboro, and Chapel Hill. But you need a car to get there (or a friend with a car).

Local Atmosphere

The surrounding area is Burlington, and don't let them fool you there is no atmosphere here. There is a shuttle that takes you to the shopping center, but basically transportation other than that is limited, and the novelty of the outlets soon wears off. Popular stores like Forever 21, H&M or Aldos can be found in Greensboro and Raleigh. You will need a a car here, or access to someone who has a vehicle. There is an attempt to bolster the community, but I wouldn't see any major improvement for the next 5-10 years.
