College Prowler Take
It’s important to feel safe wherever you’re going to school, and environment plays a big role in this. Elon is located in a smaller area, so it’s naturally going to be more secure than some city schools. However, the university still makes the safety of its students a priority. Elon has many programs that acquaint students with the security services offered on campus and what to do in a dangerous situation. With safe rides, blue lights, and escort services, students should feel pretty safe. Even in this cozy atmosphere, however, something bad can still happen, so students are constantly reminded to be safe rather than sorry. At the beginning of the year, a presentation called “Let’s Get It On” is shown to all incoming students. This show, presented by Residence Life and Student Government Association, explains how to avoid sticky situations and what to do in case something has happened already. Security is something that Elon students are well acquainted with. The blue-light system could use some improvement. In the big area between Koury Athletic Center, Belk Library, and Moseley Center, there are very few streetlights and no blue lights at all. The implementation of security cameras has helped the situation, though, especially in the dimly lit parking lots. There have been a few incidents in the past few years of break-ins, theft, and burglaries, but Elon does a good job of communicating this information to its students via the infamous “Smith Jackson e-mails.” Elon campus security works closely with Elon town police to thoroughly investigate cases, when needed. Despite the few negative incidents, however, Elon is one of the safest campuses around.

Elon is one of the safest campuses I have ever heard of. We hardly ever have acts of violence or sexual assault, and the students on a whole are mature about these sorts of issues. Campus Security is always available, and there are safety phones throughout campus. |

Other than the typical speeders and underage drinkers, Elon has very few crimes. Safety on campus is well designed and instituted. |

Campus security is great. The second day we’re on campus, we go to a presentation called ‘Let’s Get It On,’ which makes light of the risks of rape, alcohol poisoning, etc (by making light of it we don’t feel like we’re getting another lecture). It’s presented by students and they go over things such as what the number is to reach campus security (5555), escort services in case you don’t feel safe walking across campus at night, who to report a rape to, and a service called Safe Rides. So already on your second day you know all about what Campus Security has to offer. |

I always feel like Elon is a safe place, but we are always encouraged to take safety precautions regardless. Campus Security is a good department with good, smart people running it. |

The only avoidable issue would be that of bikes. If you have a bike, consider not bringing it on campus, as there is a good chance it may be stolen or, worse yet, vandalized. |
Did You Know?Elon offers a volunteer service called Safe Rides on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. These volunteers answer phone calls from Elon students who are at parties or bars and bring them safely back to the University. There is no charge to the students, and it is completely confidential. The program was created to ensure that no student gets in a car with a drunk driver or gets behind the wheel after drinking. According to statistics from Campus Security from the years 2000–2002, there were no robberies reported, only four motor vehicle thefts, and only one aggravated assault. The Elon Pendulum, the school’s newspaper, reports all students who are either arrested or given a referral, along with what crime they committed. If a student breaks the law, they have to bear the shame of the whole campus knowing.
