Worst of

Worst Things

  1. Very little diversity on campus.
  2. Laundry facilities are sparse, sometimes dirty, and some still charge with quarters, which can be inconvenient.
  3. Sports teams are not the most successful.
  4. Some of the meal plan restrictions can be frustrating and nonsensical.
  5. The education program is very strong but not broad. Elon does not offer licenses for teaching ESL, drama, dance, or other specifics. Check with the education department to make sure what you want is offered.
  6. There is no music building. If you are interested in music, you have to walk over the train tracks to "the other side of the world" to meet with your voice or instrument instructor.
  7. Parking tickets & towing fines
  8. The Department of Performing Arts does not own the dance studios, and thus must get permission to use them from Koury Athletic Center, making it difficult for dancers to practice and forcing aerobics classes to work around other schedules.
  9. None of the dining halls open before 11 a.m. on weekends. Octago opens before 11 a.m. on Saturdays only. This is extremely difficult for students who like to get an early start on the weekend. (Yes, college students can get up before noon!)
  10. The lines in the dining halls are always ridiculously long. Don't ever try to get lunch at Octagon at noon--you'll wait a long time!

Diversity? What's That?

Elon seems to want to pride itself on seeking out diverse new students. It seems to me that aside from a few random minority students here and there, everyone is a cookie-cutter rich snobby white girl.

Local Atmosphere

The surrounding area is Burlington, and don't let them fool you there is no atmosphere here. There is a shuttle that takes you to the shopping center, but basically transportation other than that is limited, and the novelty of the outlets soon wears off. Popular stores like Forever 21, H&M or Aldos can be found in Greensboro and Raleigh. You will need a a car here, or access to someone who has a vehicle. There is an attempt to bolster the community, but I wouldn't see any major improvement for the next 5-10 years.

Drinking Is a Way of Life at Elon

Alcohol is HUGE on campus here at Elon and dominates the drug scene. Frats and other parties make alcohol easily accessible to underaged minors, who (trust me) take advantage of the opportunity. Not choosing to drink, I have had a hard time enjoying Elon's social scene, which I believe is quite unfortunate.

Other than alcohol, marijuana is the most common drug used.
