Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Go to the Organization Fair in September.
  • It’s not a good school for people who are undecided about their major.
  • Most things at orientation aren’t really mandatory.
  • No one's going to be drafted for the WNBA from Emerson’s basketball team.
  • Procrastination doesn’t work.
  • To sell that graphing calculator because you probably won’t need to take any math classes.
Tips to Succeed
  • Be sure about what you want to study before coming here.
  • Do not wait until 10 minutes before class to print out your paper in a lab; disaster is bound to strike.
  • Go to class.
  • Join student organizations; they’ll help you get hands-on experience in your field, and begin to know whether you want to do it for the rest of your life.
  • Move off campus sophomore year; you’ll grow up faster.
  • Take tons of internships (yes, it’s that important).
  • Take tons of internships.
  • Use professors and their office hours as much as possible.

Cigarette City

You literally can NOT walk to class without walking through about 5-10 clouds of smoke, Emerson kids smoke incessantly and refuse to acknowledge the fact that some of us chose not to kill our lungs and won't move out of your way ever, they are all oblivious and self involved enough to think the WHOLE world revolves around them.

Tight-Knit Group

One of the best things about Emerson is how tight-knit the school and your programs are. Emerson will always hook you up with internships and even jobs. I know a junior in BFA Acting that already has been guaranteed a job in New York after she graduates and internships until then. Your friends are all somehow in your field and will always help you out later in life, along with your professors.

The Creative People!

Emerson is a school strictly for communication and the arts so the students that attend are the artsy/creative/theater types. However, they are also intelligent. There are a lot of gay students as well.

Emerson is great because (although its small and not widely known to the general public) it has a great reputation in the fields it teaches. Any employer who knows their stuff in journalism, film, theater, etc. will know Emerson and trust it. Because of this, Emerson students get AWESOME internships (ex. NBC).

Parties mostly happen at other, larger schools like Boston U. However, there is plenty to do at Emerson - like our theater, which is a beautiful, antique/renovated place that shows our student production. There's also plenty to do around the city of course (ex. museums, cultural attractions).
