Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Interested in moving to a city with big ideas? Then Boston’s for you. Filled to the city limits with colleges, Boston offers everything imaginable for entertainment. From theater to live music, from sports to art, there is plenty to keep you occupied in this city. Some say Boston’s best shopping is located on Newbury Street. Bursting with galleries, restaurants, and high-end retail stores, Newbury Street attracts many tourists and locals who are looking to spend some cash. Other fine shopping areas include Downtown Crossing, Harvard Square, and Central Square. As for culture, Boston’s theater district is a godsend, especially for students. Rush tickets are available an hour before most shows for about half the price of ticket reservations. Emerson’s own Cutler Majestic Theater presents touring operas and ballets, as well as student productions.

The Charles River divides Boston from Cambridge and Somerville, and the Promenade is a gorgeous area for biking, skating, or smooching. Boston’s location in New England allows for easy trips to the beach or the mountains, to New York City or Cape Cod, or even a bus ride to Canada. Though the large number of young people makes the city great for nightlife and social activity, no liquor sales on Sundays and early curfews for bars remind Boston residents that this isn’t New York.

Emerson College: Life in the Big City

Emerson has one of the best locations a college can have. It might not have an actual campus with a quad, but the Boston Common is pretty much the same thing. There is plenty to do and lots to see. The Esplanade is beautiful, as wells as the view from the Harvard bridge. Emerson is right next to 3 of the major subway (T) stops, so getting around is very easy. There are many other colleges in the area, so the majority of the city is comprised of college students.

Downtown Boston and Much More

Emerson College is located in the center of Downtown Boston, just in front of the Boston Common. Chinatown is right next door (literally, walk down Boylston Street and you're there), and nearby Chinatown is Downtown Crossing, where all the markets are. But if you want some designers, Newbury Street is a five-seven minute walk from Emerson. Want to go somewhere else, but don't have a car? Take the T! It's the subway that links Boston and other cities, which means weekend trips to Cambridge for Harvard parties or poetry nights at the Cantab in Central Square is made easy in a fifteen-twenty minute ride. There's no reason to not know what to do in Boston as there's everything around. Emerson doesn't have a campus, the CITY is the campus! Go to the Harbor, watch some theatre in the South End, get some Latino food in Jamaica Plain, go anywhere you like.
