College Prowler Take

Interested in moving to a city with big ideas? Then Boston’s for you. Filled to the city limits with colleges, Boston offers everything imaginable for entertainment. From theater to live music, from sports to art, there is plenty to keep you occupied in this city. Some say Boston’s best shopping is located on Newbury Street. Bursting with galleries, restaurants, and high-end retail stores, Newbury Street attracts many tourists and locals who are looking to spend some cash. Other fine shopping areas include Downtown Crossing, Harvard Square, and Central Square. As for culture, Boston’s theater district is a godsend, especially for students. Rush tickets are available an hour before most shows for about half the price of ticket reservations. Emerson’s own Cutler Majestic Theater presents touring operas and ballets, as well as student productions.

The Charles River divides Boston from Cambridge and Somerville, and the Promenade is a gorgeous area for biking, skating, or smooching. Boston’s location in New England allows for easy trips to the beach or the mountains, to New York City or Cape Cod, or even a bus ride to Canada. Though the large number of young people makes the city great for nightlife and social activity, no liquor sales on Sundays and early curfews for bars remind Boston residents that this isn’t New York.

Boston is a city filled to the brim with colleges, so you'll meet students from everywhere really. Boston is a nice mix of current and historical. The JFK Library, the Freedom Trail, and the Movie Tour of Boston are just some of the fun things you can do here. Boston is very strict about nightclubs and enforcing 21+ rules, so very few places have 18+ nights.

I live in Allston. It’s a very student-oriented neighborhood. There are a lot of cheap restaurants and bars. There are also a lot of scary Emerson College frat boys, who will come to parties you throw and steal your beer; avoid these people. There are a lot of pretentious indie musician boys who are very cute, but will only eat at Grasshopper and talk about Pavement. They’ll also steal your beer.

You should visit the North End, Davis Square, Coolidge Corner, Harvard Square, Brookline, Fenway, the restaurants on the backside and in the basements of the North End, the Harvard Museums, and the Kennedy Library. Take the commuter rails out of the city to Salem or New Hampshire in October.
