Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Public transportation is part of daily life for most students. Between the buses, subways, and commuter rails, it’s easy to get anywhere you want to go in or near the city. The subway, or T, is pretty cheap, and it can take you into Cambridge, Brookline, Quincy, Somerville, and other communities in the area. Buses are cheaper than the T but take a little more concentration to figure out how to get where you want to go. Emerson offers a slightly discounted monthly T pass that you can sign up for, and if you’re lucky, your parents won’t notice that they’re paying for it. Subway trains and buses stop running between midnight and 1 a.m. during the week, but Night Owl buses run until 2 a.m. on the weekends, which is when the bars and clubs close anyway. Most students agree that the T is really easy to navigate, and it services any area that you’d want to visit.

Subway service is very reliable, although as with anything, there are delays that always seem to happen on the one day you have to be somewhere on time. Generally though, Boston’s public transportation is convenient and always cheaper than a taxi. It takes some getting used to, but once you know the system, it really is incredibly efficient.

The Pros and Cons of Going to College in a City

Boston has a good public transportation system, the MBTA (also known as the "T"). The T can be compared to the NYC subway in the sense that it has multiple lines that include trains and buses. The downfall of the T is that is closes at 12:35 AM, so when students stay out late they are forced to take Taxis everywhere they go. Taxis fares are expensive for college students, but they are more safe and convenient than walking late at night. Overall, a city is a great place to go to school because you don't have to worry about driving.

Public Transportation Is Right Outside Your Door

Emerson is located in the heart of Boston and public transportation is everywhere. There's a convenient MBTA train stop and several bus stops all at your dorm's front door.

Bike, Bus, Taxi, or T

Because it's Boston, no one really has a car. We depend on the T mostly, which can take you pretty much everywhere you need to go, but that closes each night at 12:30. After that it's all taxis, which are decently expensive. Some students have bikes too, though getting around on crowded days can be a little difficult.
