College Prowler Take

High on the list of complaints about Boston is its weather. Most New Englanders are used to the unpredictable changes in temperature and humidity that can occur here, but students who were lucky enough to grow up in the presence of palm trees might get a rude awakening. Boston winters seem to last from mid-October to early April, which is basically the entire school year. In one recent April, snow fell during the last week of class. In the seemingly eternal winter, temperatures can be as low as five degrees below zero. What’s worse than the snow and bitter cold is the incessant wind, which can gust so fast that people are literally pushed down the street.

The good thing about Boston’s weather is the sincere appreciation you’ll acquire for sunny days, warm days, tropical vacations, and your home away from Boston—unless of course you’re from New England. Though there are plenty of days to wish you had a personal chauffeur to keep you out of the cold, Boston does have its time in the sunshine. Late spring and summer times are beautiful and don’t reach nearly the same scorching temperatures as other East Coast cities. Summertime brings humidity, thus frizzy hair, but many Bostonians relish these days as a refreshing solace from the icy, wet days of winter, even if things do get a bit sticky.

It gets extremely cold in Boston during the winter, so bundle up! Fall and spring are lovely, breezy, and fairly mild. In the winter, there is ice and slush everywhere, so invest in a good pair of boots and a thick coat. The summers are hot. Almost any season, the Common and Public Gardens, located across the street from Emerson, are beautiful and full of life.

I expected the seasons in the Northeast to be easily determinable, but there have been some random warm days in winter. You can be bundled up with your snowsuit and scarf one day and wearing just a cardigan the next. One item you absolutely need is rain boots. There are some crazy puddles on the corner of Tremont and Boylston.

It’s freezing and wet in the winter; wear boots and hats. Bundle up, don’t be that cool stupid girl in a windbreaker. You will die. Spring and fall are really amazing. It’s hot and sticky in the summer.

For fall semester, a heavy parka, snow pants, ear muffs, gloves, a scarf, snow boots, and those heat packets that last for eight hours when you slip them in your gloves are recommended. The same for spring, too.

I love cold weather, and rain, and humidity in the summer. Boston’s perfect, absolutely perfect.
